Please help us complete this documentary on free speech!

"Our ability to communicate is important because from it derives everything that we think about as civilized in a civilization, every law, every regulation, every constitution and in fact every other right derives from the practice of communicating with each other.” -- Julian Assange, in Free Speech Fear Free

Is freedom of speech one of those nice things to have, but not really necessary for a happy life, a thriving society and a successful economy? Or is it central to who we are as human beings? Is it hard-wired into us?

Can we be fully human without freedom of speech?

Is it the oxygen of our society?

This film, produced by Direct-H (www.direct-h.com), and created by me, Tarquin Ramsay, is for my generation, with its updates, "likes", tweets and its often cavalier approach to our essential and hard-won freedoms. It will describe the central role this freedom should have in our lives, and how we must fight and struggle to nurture and retain it.

The Project!

Through the use of interviews with high profile experts, cases and life stories I am creating a documentary exploring the truths behind freedom of speech, getting to the core of what it really is, what its like to have freedom taken away, and all the issues surrounding a right everyone takes for granted. The film will study the nature of censorship, hate speech and an important topic currently being heavily debated at the moment; privacy. This film will answer questions such as to what extent should there be limitations on freedom of speech? Where should we draw the line between privacy and freedom of speech? – A question constantly being debated by politicians worldwide.

Through extreme life experiences and interviews with experts, I will give the younger generation, along with adults, a chilling insight into what life is really like when the right we all believe is sitting on our shoulder 24/7  is taken away from you.

Some of the names below may seem to a person of my age, but this a topic so current and thought provocative that it piqued the interest of individuals I'd never have expected to encounter. They include:

  • Julian Assange – Wikileaks Founder
  • Jude Law – Actor and victim of british phone hacking scandal.
  • Natalia Kaliada – Creative Director at Belarus Free Theatre
  • Liubou Kavaliova – Mother of a boy executed in Belarus
  • Julia Farrington – Head of Arts at Index on Censorship
  • Ian Taplin – Loyds Bank whistleblower
  • Gavin Macfadyen – Director at Centre for Invesgative Journalism
  • Belarus Free Theatre Cast
  • 20 sixteen-year-olds at Bedales School.
  • MP Steve Brine – Winchester and Chandlers Ford
  • Charlie Veitch – Youtube sensation
  • Keith Budge – Bedales School
  • Stephen Carville – Peter Symonds College
  • Mark Jackman – Yateley School
  • Iosbel Smith – Outreach at Bedales
  • John Kiriakou – CIA Whistleblower

Keep returning as I have exciting new interviewees coming very soon!

Why? Why? Why?

JANUARY 2012: I sat down with a video camera and interviewed a group of my school friends, all aged 16. I asked them a question: what is freedom of speech? Not a single person could come up with a reasonable definition. Many replied saying, "I don't know." I immediately knew from that point that I had to make this film to prove, to inspire and to educate young people, and even many adults, about freedom of speech.  I need to get across why this right is so so so fundamental to our, and the many other, democratic societies.

A little about myself...

My name is Tarquin Ramsay, I am eighteen-years-old and an enthusiastic film-maker who is creating films that are exciting and stretch my ability. On which basis I have bitten off more than I can chew, probably, but with the optimism of youth...

I am currently studying film at Peter Symonds College and from a young age have always been making films. My horror film recently won the best piece of coursework within my course at the Peter Symonds Oscars. I recently also entered a large 48-hour film competition where we were given 48 hours to write, shoot and edit a film that had some reference to the given theme of "sign". The film finished in 3rd place, and you can view the short film here – https://vimeo.com/63421334. At the age of 15 I also spent a few months directing and producing my own short film. After months of planning, I eventually assembled a crew of 15 which included a cinematographer, camera assistant, gaffers, sound mixers, make-up artists, catering staff, actors and actresses and an editor. Many worked for free but to pay for insurance and travel costs I raised money by doing a car wash every weekend. Tough but worthwhile! You can view the film here – https://vimeo.com/28542209

The finished product...

What happens when post production has finally finished?

  1. The film will head to an array of exciting and upcoming film festivals!
  2. The project will see itself all over Youtube and Vimeo!
  3. Schools and educational institutions will receive copies of the film in order to educate my generation on their freedom rights, allowing 12-18 year olds to gain an expansive insight into the reasons why freedom of speech is so fundamental, and so central, to our society. The film will come as part of a package including a lesson plan and activities for the classroom.
  4. We will be pitching the documentary to television channels.

Remember all of the above cannot be achieved without your help!

Free Speech Fear Free has recently signed contracts with Direct-H: a production company that create theatre, film and image.

Founded by the film's producer, Olivia Gillman, they have previously taken commissions from a range of organisations: from Oxford University to festivals such as In the Woods and Wilderness.

Bertha

Free Speech Fear Free recently received a grant from the Bertha Foundation. Bertha are in partnership with Britdoc and Channel 4 and provide grants for upcoming and talented film makers. When receiving the grant, Bertha stated that they believed this film had huge potential and could see it making a significant change into how we see free speech. The grant has enabled us to finish filming but has not provided enough to cover editing costs. If you feel like you want to make a difference then please donate something...

Our Costs!

I am working with a group of young documentary film-makers, including Niels, a young aspiring freelance film-maker. This project could not have asked for a better team member!

So you get some idea of the costs in place, this is what your donations will be spent on:

Simply:

  • Music rights from Audio Network £500 (creative content rights: music rights and archive footage)
  • Film festival submissions – £2000
  • Creation of packages for educational institutions £500 (Educational training package which will come equipped with lesson plans, power points and class room activities)
  • Finalising post production costs/screening costs   £200
  • Poster and graphic designs £800 (Outreach campaign: Poster, graphics, flyers, social screening venue)

Every pound we collect goes a long way towards getting the message of this film into the public dialogue. This is a non-profit film!

Without your help this film will not carry on! Everything done so far will be worth nothing! This project is too precious to let it go to waste!

I will involve as many of you as possible by throwing out rewards to donators as a thank you for making this project happen.

Up for grabs:

  • Digital downloads of the film

  • Exclusive Freedom of Speech T-shirts

  • Signed DVD copies from a few special people

  • Special Thanks

  • Unlimited supply of producer credits available

  • Pieces of memorabilia from the film such as, question cards, receipts, signed books and much more...

  • Skype interviews

  • Signed copies of books and dvd's from the experts
