Summary:
Frère raison is a collective interpretation of a vision by our writers, Omar Elhamy and Paul Chotel. The story we are telling is a tale of individual metamorphosis, unseen mutations of the self, and mythology. Geographically, the film is situated first in Montreal Quebec and then in Shippagan, New Brunswick. The films protagonist, Marc André, struggles with the social implications of his workplace, a super-hospital construction site in Montreal. When his friend and co-worker, Jean Luc, is fatally injured in a work accident, Marc André is riddled with trauma, and becomes haunted by the missing head. In this state, Marc becomes more open to new encounters, and the stories of those around him, he hears esoteric tales, and experiences strange hallucinations.![]()
Frère raison 's director, Omar Elhamy worked in Egypt as an assistant director on internationally acclaimed films. In 2012, Elhamy co-founded an experimental film festival, EcransMed-screenings from the Mediterranean (www.ecransmed.com), establishing a stable network of support for his projects. Having gained important industry experience in Egypt, France and most recently Canada, Elhamy's main intention is to develop his own work. In 2014 he wrote, directed and co-produced his short film, Aquarium, with assistance from the Montreal Arts Interculturels (MAI), Maison Collectif and Trio Orange. The film screened at the juried 2014 Concordia Film Festival, was awarded best narrative film and screened at the award ceremonies for the Academy of Art Video Art’s awards (AAVA) and, most recently, featured at Projection de films du Moyen-Orient. Building on the connections developed through the making of Aquarium and EcransMed, Frère raison is establishing a diverse funding approach including grants, partnerships and co-production relationships. This, in addition to your support, will help offset the cost of a full length film. The modest amount we are fundraising with Indigogo will cover the most basic costs of equipment rental, travel to New Brunswick, food for our team, incidentals, insurance, set design, location permits and rentals. Nothing will be wasted. If we receive more than the requested amount, rest assured the money will all go towards production costs.

OUR TEAM: is a dedicated and talented group of film/video artists and technicians, comprised primarily of award winning students and alumni from the prestigious Film Production Programme at Concordia University in Montreal. Working under Afra Productions, our collective production company, each team member has produced several video projects.
IMPACT: While not overtly political, Frère raison forms a kind of 'people's history' as the narrative weaves multiple perspectives through a range of characters heralding from diverse socio-economic and racial backgrounds. Structurally, the project is also an experiment in film making itself, seeking to complicate normative hierarchical working methods and roles as they have persisted in the north american film industry for generations. In this regard, the project is experimental by nature. One expression of this is the desire to involve individuals and communities not normally present in the production process, while also allowing those with a film background the opportunity to develop and strengthen their skills in an atmosphere of professionalism and experimentation. We believe in the power of cinema to express human experience, we hope you will help us tell this unique and powerful story.
