Mountain Filled 2 Projects Mountain Filled 2 Projects

I am Sophie Swoffer, an associate artist of De Montfort University. I am also a recent MA graduate from DMU after completing my postgraduate degree in Performance Practices there.

This campaign/event is an opportunity for artists/students from across the Midlands to come together and share their skills and knowledge from their artistic areas in order to learn off one another and create together through improvised play. The individuals involved will be engaging in an evening of improvised activities with which are focused on building relationships and trust. We aim to bring together dancers, musicians, performance artists, photographers and many more uniting their unique talents and creating something spectacular as a result!

This campaign is extremely important to me as I am aware that are not many opportunities available at the moment specifically in the Midlands that enable artists of different disciplines to collaborate, as a consequence artists often shy away from working with other artists that do not share their particular skill sets. From personal experience, I have found that when I have collaborated with students from different artistic backgrounds we have learnt a great deal from one another which has in turn benefited our own practice and given us more confidence as practitioners.

Ideally we would need £800 of funding in order for the event to take place. This would cover:

1) Paying staff that we have employed to help aid the event such as, security and helpers to dress and clean the space (insisted by the venue at £20 an hour), extra helpers to help transport equipment and set up equipment, photographers and film editors to record the event.

2) Purchase of the refreshments, food and alcoholic beverages.

3) Surface materials to keep the space safe and comfortable. We aim to create a 'chilled area' within the space where artists can get to know one another and discuss their subject areas in a relaxed areas so we would like to purchase some materials and throws to create this section, along with seating such as bean bags or sofas.  We also want to use plastic sheeting to protect walls in the space where artists such as painters or performance artists could get their creative juices flowing and have the freedom to use paint and other materials without harming the space.

4) Room hire

The event will be held in Two Queens Leicester http://2queens.com/, which is the perfect location for the event with its massive and industrial space.

"Two Queens is an artist led studio and gallery complex situated in Leicester’s Cultural Quarter. With the ambition of providing a centre for experimental modes of arts production, exhibition and exchange, Two Queens is dedicated to establishing an agenda for new activity in the city and across the region." --Two Queens

5) Public evnet liability

There will be 3 main insurances that we need to cover for the event:  Employers Liability, Public Liability and All Risks (Equipment).

6) Pre-Show Promotion

Myself and my colleague (also an associate artist of DMU and co creator of the event) will be performing a pre-show to the event at DMU to entice people to come to the event where we will be engaging in improvised activities. Here we will be giving out tickets to our audience which will provide them with one free drink when coming to the event to hopefully increase the number people who come to the event and to create some excitement for it.

This project is extremely valuable in establishing a strong community relationship between artists in the midlands and across the country, bringing together their unique talents and skills. Collaboration between artistic individuals is something that we see as essential in sustaining performance art as a culture. Uniting artists that would not normally work together has the potential to create amazing partnerships that would not of otherwise been found. Improvisation is a fantastic skill to have in performance, as it shakes individuals lose of their inhibitions and worries and instead enables them to trust their instincts and welcome the unknown in order to make fantastic discoveries along the way. Combining improvisation with the mish mash of artistic disciplines holds fantastic potential!
Our aim is to get rid of the stigma of dancers just working with dancers and musicians with musicians and instead enable individuals to embrace the unknown and build trust within artistic communities leaving the opportunity for future collaborations.
This is the first project that myself and my colleague have engaged in without institutional guidance but is a path that each of us are extremely passionate about and would love to be able to continue to do in the future. Your help would be extremely important and vital in us learning more about the help that is available and we would love to offer our help in return, whether it me further advertisement of indiegogo or getting more people involved in your projects.
Obviously there are many potential problems and obstacles in place against us achieving our goal. Firstly as aforementioned my colleague and myself are new to this and so may be unfortunately overlooked as a consequence. However we are both completely invested in this event and are perpetually seeking advice from experienced individuals and drawing on our contacts from the local performance community.
Also as the event is centred upon improvisation there is of course potential for many problems as we cannot predict what the performers may do or whether they will successfully collaborate with one another. However we are undertaking research in how to avoid this and are embracing the unknown as something beautiful but risk filled. We have also recruited a 'host' figure to help the events along on the evening to try to help motivate situations who has a catalogue of experience in improvised activities. My colleague and myself are also training in how to lead warm up exercises that relax and motivate the participants.
Also we are going to have musicians which will play throughout the evening so the atmosphere and mood of the session never fully drops and there is always the potential for something exciting to happen.

Thank you so much for reading this pledge and we would be so appreciative if you could share and pass on the event to people you think may be interested, the more the merrier!
