Hey everybody! My name is Wayne Clingman. You may remember me from the Lots to Plots Gardens’ project on Indie Go Go. We didn't meet the goals for that leg of our fundraising campaign and, as such, we had to cut out the mushroom growing operation.
Since running the first campaign, a doctor of Chinese medicine aided us in appropriating space to grow mushrooms in an environmentally friendly manner. This will remove materials which can be composted from the local landfills and provide free composting to other gardens. The best part is, the Doctor will buy the mushrooms we grow to use in his practice. In addition, we have recently made agreements with several local Racine restaurants to purchase our mushrooms. But to make this happen, we need your financial support - so we're going run a second Indie Go Go campaign. The mushroom project will initially need about $750 to get off the ground.
TO GET STARTED WE NEED THE FOLLOWING:
- A bicycle to pick up compost and to deliver the mushrooms (we'll build a cart to pull behind the bicycle)
- Mushroom spawn
- PVC and other miscellaneous materials to build the bike cart
- The purchase of a domain name and a web hosting account
- Large, sealable plastic containers
- Public Liability Insurance
REWARDS FOR YOU:
$10 - $49 - A thank you phone call (US only. Must provide number)
$50 - $99 - The above and a unique tree charm crafted by a member of the Menominee Indian tribe
$100+ - All the above plus 450g of dried oyster mushrooms
WHY IS THIS PROJECT IMPORTANT?
- Locally grown produce is less expensive
- It provides more choices in the marketplace
- Locally grown means it's fresher when it hits the plate
- When used for their herbal properties, freshness makes for a more powerful end product
- Sale of local produce helps the local economy rather than having to order the produce from non-local or out of state sources
- Composting for locally grown products helps to reduce landfill usage
- It's a great part of the "Buy Local" cause that shows that more than just tomatoes can be grown locally.
- Compost made as a by-product of the growing process helps to improve local gardens by improving the quality of the soil.
-This project will also help to increase awareness of how mushrooms can be used in herbal medicines
