Our 'Herstory'

In 1983, Paula Franklin, a black woman at Brown, felt the need for more student choreography on campus. That year, she choreographed a piece for the annual Fall Dance Concert, called "Portrait of a Studio." This piece was the precursor to Fusion Dance Company. In the spring semester of the same academic year,  auditions were held to form a diverse company of 23 students. Over the past 32 years, Fusion has tried to uphold this tradition as a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic group of both men and women who perform a variety of styles and do not conform to modern day constraints on body shape, size, dance style or choreography.

What We Do

Every year, Fusion Dance Company works tirelessly to produce our Annual Spring Show. We give every company member the opportunity to choreograph a piece in any style he or she wishes. The final product is an inspiring, entertaining, and eclectic collection of dances that never fails to move audience members, regardless of their previous background or experience. In addition to our Spring Show, we perform several times throughout the year for fundraisers and charity events and regularly organize workshops open to the entire student body. Every dancer holds a unique leadership position within the company, enabling members to contribute managerially as well as artistically.

What We Need

Putting on the best show possible isn't free! Certain expenses like renting light/sound equipment and providing housing and food for our dancers during our winter dance camp are covered by ticket sales. Other things we need to raise money to afford:

Costumes: Costumes significantly enhance the overall experience of a dance performance. Fusion choreographers create pieces with specific visual and artistic intentions in mind; costumes play a very important role in this process. But far too often, Fusion has to fall back on borrowing clothing and pulling together improvised costumes. With your help, Fusion will be able to provide costumes for all choreographers. Contributing around $100 will buy costumes for one piece!

Photographer: Every year we hire a photographer to take our promo photos and document our show. Contributing to this campaign will allow Fusion to get the most talented photographer we can!

Videographer: We also create a promo video to advertise our show. Watch past promo videos from 20142013, and 2012Contributing will help us make the best promo video yet!
