Our Story

In the past 18 months Curb Denizen has made over a dozen short films, music videos and promotional pieces, all self-funded.  The company was started by London Film School graduates Joanna Bence and Fyodor Druzin in 2010 with the aim of making films the way we want to make them; with style, with energy and with heart.

The projects are:

Invisible Strings - Trailer viewable at: http://vimeo.com/33801118

What if you real boy actually wanted to be Pinnochio?  The story of a girl, a boy, his puppet and all the pitfalls in between.  Written and produced before 'The Beaver'....

The Expat - Trailer viewable at: http://vimeo.com/33808092

A short documentary following Thomas Lowers, an American expat and former real estate agent who packed up and moved to Saint Petersburg, Russia where he now works as a DJ and english teacher...and has never been happier...

The Milkman - Excerpts viewable at: http://vimeo.com/33804227

The Milkman is a short documentary about 72 year old Milkman Robert Holding, from Burnley UK, who in 2008 was arrested for supplying medicinal marijuana resin to his elderly clients.  At the time of shooting Mr Holding was on probation and forced to wear a tracker on his ankle as well as suffering a curfew that made it difficult for him to visit his wife who was hospitalised with advanced Alzheimer's.  We talk to Mr Holding, his family and arresting officer about his arrest and seek to give a portrait of the man above the crime of which he was convicted.

Mazarine Blue Music Videos - Viewable at: http://vimeo.com/channels/mazarineblue

6 music videos by 6 international directors from Russia, USA, Italy, South Korea, Mexico and Australia.  Each video produced for $400 and all videos filmed over 6 days with over fifty cast and crew, all volunteering on the project.

The Impact

Whether it be music videos, short films or documentaries, all have been produced on micro-budgets (ie, under $5000 for short films and under $500 for music videos) and we want to get them noticed.  For us, yes, but mainly  for the casts and crew who slogged their guts out in the heat and the cold for nothing more than a sandwich and a thank you.  We want to make more films, ones where we can pay the crews who work so hard for us and to do that we need people to see what we've made for nothing.   Plus if you like the films we've made so far, we'll be able to make more.

We have six projects going out into festivals at the moment, all that were made for virtually nothing and we just don't have the money that festivals ask to submit.  For example, the reputable Melbourne Film Festival asks for $65 to submit a short film and offers no guarantees of acceptance.

We need to get out there.  Help us get out there.

What We Need & What You Get

We need money to enter the films into festivals and we have a detailed plan for each of the projects that targets festivals which have shown films of that style or genre in the past as well as focussing on our home territories of Russia, Australia, the UK, USA and South Korea.

The recession has hit the youth working in the film industry harder than those at the top.  There is an epidemic In the UK film industry where most positions are now unpaid and put under the title of 'intern' in order to get away with getting highly qualified people and paying them nothing.  By supporting all of these films you'll be supporting those starting out who don't have the funds to get themselves noticed.

We also need to cover music rights for the documentary The Expat which used tracks by Gogol Bordello.  The music company in question has been very gracious in offering low rates for the rights to the track but even that is outside of our range at the moment.  In order for The Expat to be viewed as intended we need to guarantee the rights for the track.

All donators will get a DVD featuring the all of the Curb Denizen films from 2009-2011.

If there is a specific project you wish to support you can email jo@curbdenizen.com for more information.

Other Ways You Can Help

Get the word out there!  Pass this on to anyone you think might be interested in documentaries, short films or music videos in Russia, Australia, the UK or the world!  (That should be everyone...)
