Hi I'm Kristen Currier!

Growing up I moved across the country with my Air Force family and I currently live in Boston. I just completed my BFA in Animation at Massachusetts College of Art and Design this May and my films have been screened in festivals both domestically and internationally.

Just having finished my first animated documentary, Gaining Altitude, about women in aviation, I am thrilled to share that Women in Aviation Association is using my film to inspire young girls' interest in flight around the world. I am excited to continue making documentary films that have a positive impact on young people.

I'm one of 6 people internationally chosen to attend Women on the Wing residency.  The opportunity to participate, research and make art at Women on the Wing is once in a lifetime and will help me continue my mission to create work that promotes aviation among women. The only problem is the cost of travel and fees.

Women on the Wing Research Residency

Woman on the Wing is a week long residency near Ottawa, Canada. The residency is for international female artists interested in air, flight, and the sky to work together to experience celestial phenomenon. The residency, which will take place in the July, will facilitate daily excursions into the air through field trips:

  • Pilot lesson in a Cessna
  • Gliding lesson
  • Hang gliding lesson
  • Hot air balloon ride
  • Astronomy workshop
  • Canadian Aviation and Space Museum tour
  • Sailing on the Ottawa river
  • Breathing for optimal performance workshop
  • Remote control airplane workshop
  • Ornithology workshop

The Impact

Not only will this residency immensely impact my films but it will also set me on a track to achieve one of my lifelong goals...getting my pilots license. The sky is a huge source of inspiration for me. I've dreamed of having my own pilots license, and it's amazing that my first lesson would be among other sky loving artists.

This is an incredible opportunity for discovery. In order to animate anything convincingly you have to understand the movement. The more time I can experience flight, the more realistically I can translate the motion of what I feel into drawn animation. After experiencing the residency I will be able to confidently animate different types of flight.

Animation is an easily relatable medium, and when used in tandem with documentary it crosses multiple interest and age ranges and reaches more viewers. To me animated documentary is the best way to bring recognition to these amazing women forgotten in history.

I feel strongly that Women on the Wing would make a huge and lasting impact on my work.

Thank You!

Thank you for your supporting my quest to combine flight and animation. I appreciate all of your generosity. Anything helps me get closer to making it to Women on the Wing!
