During the depression his mother taught music to poor children and his father, an activist, fought hard and won music programs for their school system.
At 13 he was getting his jazz education playing all night in the brothels of Montréal's Red Light District.
At 16 every bandleader in America wanted him.
Maynard went on to become one of the greatest jazz legends of all time, and to many the worlds greatest trumpet player. Maynard’s Alumni is a “Who’s Who Of Jazz”. At a time when racial segregation was overt in the US, he selected writers and musicians regardless of skin color.
At the dawn of the 1960’s Maynard was the first to take LSD with Timothy Leary, and set out with his family and 4 kids on a global odyssey, “Across The Universe” to India and beyond, overcoming harrowing odds and risking everything to discover who he really was, both as a man and a musician. John Lennon showed up at his gigs to sit in on bongos and he opened for Led Zeppelin and The Grateful Dead and made some of his greatest records during this period.
Ultimately, He returned to the U.S, defied his critics and changed the face of American music.
Maynard was a humanitarian who believed in the democratization of the transformational opportunities available through music. He was an ambassador of goodwill who was thanked by president’s George Bush and Clinton. He was a dedicated teacher and mentor to thousands of aspiring young musicians, a tireless supporter of music education who gave hundreds of teaching clinics and concerts year after year across America and arranged to have containers of instruments donated to impoverished schools in India, where he taught every year for free.
Canada awarded him the Honor Of Canada, the highest recognition given to a civilian and hoisted him hundreds of feet in the air to extinguish the Canadian Olympic Flame, where the official Olympic Motto "Swifter, Higher, Stronger" was fully embraced.
"Ferguson lit up thousands of young horn players with pride and excitement. Ferguson approached his music as an athletic event, much as an opera singer or weight lifter. On stage, he strained, sweated, heaved and roared. He nailed the upper registers like Shaq nailing a dunk or Lawrence Taylor nailing a running back -- and the audience reaction was exactly the same: the guttural shout, the leap to their feet, the fists in the air. We cheered Maynard as a gladiator, a combat soldier, a prize fighter"

During his lifetime he suffered through harrowing ordeals and much tragedy, including the death of his only son, but music is how he healed. Music is how he received love; music is how he gave love. Music was his home.
Our film is an independently-produced project. We currently don’t have the backing of a production company, a TV channel, or a big film studio. We're counting on donations from people like you who are willing to help us bring this important story to the screen.

It looks far more achievable if we consider the following: If we pre-sell 2000 DVD's we hit our minimum goal for the dvd and that represents only a portion of the Maynard fans!! The Hollywood entertainment industry DOESN'T CARE ABOUT JAZZ MUSICIANS. THEY DON'T THINK ANYONE CARES ABOUT THEIR STORIES. But we don't need them. The best part is, you can help "GET ON THE BUS; THE MAYNARD FERGUSON STORY" come to life by simply pre-ordering a copy of the film AND you could get your name listed in the credits of the film as well as lots of other fun stuff! What makes this even more exciting is the fact that a successful start on an Indiegogo campaign will help us get a lot more attention for Maynard and his amazing contribution / legacy. Lets show them we care and get this film done.

A LARGE PORTION OF THE BUDGET IS FOR LICENSING ARCHIVAL FOOTAGE OF MAYNARD FROM ALL THE HISTORICAL TV SHOWS, CONCERTS AND NEWS STORIES HE APPEARED IN. WE WILL PROBABLY DELAY PAYING FOR SOME OF THAT FOOTAGE UNTIL A DISTRIBUTOR PICKS US UP AND THEY WILL PAY FOR IT AS PART OF OUR DEAL. MOST ARCHIVAL FOOTAGE HOUSES ALLOW YOU TO DO THIS.
