Short Summary
Black Student Unity is a student organization at the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse. The purpose of this organization is to establish and promote the fellowship, education, empowerment, and success of Black students at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse campus. Ten members of BSU are very excited about the opportunity to participate in a study tour to Ghana, West Africa in January 2014. Unfortunately the number of African-American college students who study abroad is very small (Institute of International Education, 2009). Lack of access to international opportunities puts Black students at a disadvantage. Cost prohibits many Black students from pursuing global opportunities like the Ghana Study Tour. If we are able to raise $10,000, we would be able to have a transformative experience in Ghana. One that would enhance our education and better prepare us to participate on the global stage
What We Need & What You Get
We are seeking to raise $10,000. The funds will be used to pay for visas, passports, and part of the program fee. If we don't reach our entire goal, students will have to take out loans for fund the trip. Students have saved some money from summer earnings. They have also participated in fund raising efforts, including selling Ghana T-shirts.
The Impact
According to Dr. Johnetta Cole, "You cannot fully understand your own life without knowing and thinking beyond your life, your own neighborhood, and even your own nation". The Ghana Study Tour will provide 10 Black Student Unity members an opportunity to explore their heritage, to gain a new perspective of the United States, and improve their professional lives. During our time in Ghana, we will likely have experiences that will influence us the remainder of our lives.
Other Ways You Can Help
If you can't make a financial contribution, please let others know about this opportunity to help students who are passionately about learning and experiencing life in another culture.
