CAMPAIGN MISSION
The Girls Love STEM Conference was established to get girls excited about STEM careers. We are particularly concerned that minority women comprise fewer than 1 in 10 employed scientists and engineers in the United (National Girls Collaborative Project, June 2013). In 2009-2010, females made up less than than 25% of participants in science, technology, engineering, and math programs nationally (US Department of Education, June 2012).
The main goal of this conference is to spark and keep girls interested in STEM and to motivate girls to pursue STEM careers. Through the conference we hope to improve girls' attitudes about STEM and can encourage successful outcomes such as completion of mathematics and science courses, reduce dropout rates, improve reading and mathematics test scores, and increase college attendance. The Girls Love STEM Conference will take place on May 3, 2014 at Trinity Washington University. It will include student exposure to hands-on and collaborative STEM focused activities, an introduction to high-quality engineering professions, and offer an environment that is less school-like where students will receive support and develop meaningful connections to STEM professionals.
Through this experience girls can gain confidence in their critical thinking and analytical skills; as well as be encouraged by STEM professionals and mentors.
NSBE DC IMPACT
We are the National
Society of Black Engineers Professionals, Washington DC Metro Area Chapter (NSBE
DC). NSBE DC was established in 1989 and officially charted in 1990, it has
been a premier chapter within the national organization. Our mission is to increase
the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically,
succeed professionally, and positively impact the community. Our success in fulfilling the mission
of NSBE is reflected in our status as the 2000, 2001, 2009, and 2012 NSBE
Professional Chapter of the Year. NSBE DC is recognized as NSBE's largest professional
chapter, and as we continue to grow, so will our impact on the community at
large.
Our programming efforts for Pre-College Initiative (PCI) has continued to reach youth to encourage them to explore careers in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Programs and activities geared toward the promotion of academic excellence, leadership, technical and cultural awareness among students in 3rd through 12th grade include: Engineering Workshops, our participation in the USA Science and Engineering Festival, and our signature Future Innovator Scholarship Program.
CAMPAIGN GOAL
Your donation will have direct impact
on young girls (6th through 12th grade) interested in STEM careers by giving them an
opportunity to interact and connect with STEM professionals, engage in hands-on
interactive activities for further engagement, and realize their dreams.
Our goal is to raise at least $2,250 to cover conference expenses such as workshop
materials, t-shirts, food, certificates, etc. (in order to fully sponsor all attendees,
our stretch goal is to raise $12,000). We originally received a seed grant in
the amount of $3500 from the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Washington DC Alumnae
Chapter.
No matter how
much we raise, all funds will go to supporting the conference. Please take a
look at the different rewards we are offering to our sponsors at different
levels. Additional money raised over our goal will directly support efforts
of planning our next Girls Love STEM Conference. No contribution is too small!
Because we are a 501©3 non-profit
organization, your contribution is tax-deductible, if funds are disbursed via PayPal
directly to the tax-exempt organization.
OTHER
WAYS YOU CAN HELP
Promote the conference, share news about the conference with
your networks, and most importantly, inspire the next generation of STEM female
leaders through your interactions and influence!
We are also looking for lunch, t-shirt, and giveaway sponsors. If you would like to become a sponsor for one of these opportunities, please contact us at girlslovestem@nsbedc.org for more information.
From all of us at NSBE DC, we really appreciate anything you
