"Until children with autism come to Benedictine, most have spent their whole lives having other people make decisions for them. . .These children have an inner voice; they do have preferences. And with an Ipad, we can teach them to communicate, for the first time in their lives they can express themselves. There is no more guessing - they can ask for more milk or dessert, they can read and share what interests them or what bothers them. In essence, they will have a voice and they can communicate with the world around them. And once that happens, doors open to all sorts of educational opportunities for them. . .Academic learning skyrockets" according to Judi Cornette, our Clinical Coordinator.
Benedictine uses an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) to evaluate each child’s progress. Developed by a team of special education teachers, therapists, medical personnel, and family members, each child’s IEP outlines goals for all areas for their progress, including specific plans for meeting those goals. IEPs are formally reviewed at least once each year, but are continually tailored by the child’s team of specialists in order to meet their needs.
Located on Maryland's Eastern Shore, Benedictine Programs and Services is a nationally recognized, accredited and cost-effective educational living and learning environment for children and adults with special needs. Established in 1959 by the Sisters of St. Benedict, Benedictine cares for 180 children and adults ages 5 through 60+ with intellectual disabilities, multiple disabilities, and autism.
We take pride in our 2011 selection as a “School of Excellence” by the National Association of Special Education teachers, and supplement our core educational and residential program with special services. These include the support of psychologists, social workers, and counselors, vocational training, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, behavior management planning, assistive technology, 24-hour nursing and medication management, a library/media center, a computer training lab, art and adaptive physical education classes, including access to an indoor swimming pool, and training in home economics and wise use of leisure time.
