In early August of this year, my cousin Suong –affectionately known as chi Anh– found out that she had a cancerous brain tumor that had metastasized from another area in her body. Though we all held out hope that it was benign and operable, it was shortly after her appointment with a neurosurgeon that we found out it was neither –she had just turned 29 that July and was in the infancy of a burgeoning law career.

By the end of September, my cousin was paralyzed from the waist down and could no longer walk, but throughout it all, she remained optimistic and cheerful, forever the ray of sunshine we all knew her to be. During this time her older brother selflessly left his job, and he and his wife took over her cares, as her parents were physically unable to do so and even though they had two small children to look after. While the doctors led us to believe that my cousin would have at least six months to a year left with us, her health began to decline not long after this –we lost her suddenly on November 6th.

I can’t even begin to describe the heartbreak my entire family felt losing chi Anh. She was so many things in her short lifetime, from an intelligent and hardworking young woman to a beloved daughter and sister, as well as a doting aunt and much-adored cousin –the list could go on. She was unbelievably kind, patient, and lived her life with such good intentions. She cared deeply about those in her life and loved widely. And she was so so so very loved in return.

My cousin looked after all of us, from something as simple as buying treats for us, to making sure that the younger cousins could pay their school fees and buy their books. She was always a generous person with her time and own fortunes –compassionate beyond measures, giving to others in what seemed like an endless capacity.

With the loss of my cousin's and her brother's income, as well as the funeral and burial costs that my aunt and uncle had to shoulder, I wanted to do something to help and give back to them as much as I can. So this holiday season, in lieu of gifts from my close friends and family members, I ask that you consider donating that money to this fundraiser. A few dollars really can go a long way in Vietnam, so I'm not asking for large donations, just anything that you're willing and able to give.
