We are the Global Learning Collaborative High School in New York City, a school for high achieving students that come from low income families. My name is Daniel Antonelli, and I am the department chair of fine arts at our school. We have a mission to offer travel opportunities to inner-city youth who are challenged everyday with issues such as financial shortcomings, newcomer immigrant assimilation, teen pregnancy, peer pressure and more. Every year students are selected through an intensive application process to attend international trips for lower costs.
In February 2014, a small group of honor students will have the opportunity to travel to Europe in an educational effort to study music, art, history and culture. During this trip, the students will experience the Dalcroze method of learning in the context of music and art. Additionally, they will experience cultural ambassadorship in interacting with students at foreign institutions abroad.
Our adventure will begin in Paris, France where we will explore the history and art by visiting the Louvre museum, Notre-Dame, Sacre Coeur, the Eiffel Tower and Versailles (where Global History comes alive!) in addition to learning about French culture, and the influence of Jazz in France. Next we will travel to Rome, Italy to learn about the rich Roman history, the Colisseum, The Vatican, Imperial Forums and the Roman Forum. We will then continue our journey onto Basel, Interlaken, and the Alps in Switzerland, where we will have the opportunity to go snowboarding, skiing, and sledding while studying the country's unique four language tradition! We are also tentatively planning on spending a final day in Germany.
Our desire is to explore new cultures and experience the world in order to return home as better global citizens. Students are required to fundraise a big part of the costs by performing a music concert, an art show, a poetry slam and through cookie baking sales. Our goal is to fund at least the remaining $10,000 towards our trip fees. The people chosen are all students who dream of traveling, but would not have the chance to if it were not for our school’s dedication to finding ways to make this trip more affordable. Therefore, I am kindly asking that you please help me give these students the opportunity of a lifetime by giving a donation. They are all amazing students who certainly deserve this. It would be of great help if you could also spread the word about our campaign to anyone who is willing or able to donate. Your help is greatly appreciated. All donations are tax deductible. Thank you!
Yours in Education,
