Short Summary

The purpose of this project is to stomp out the problem of global illiteracy by using a series of mobile apps to teach English as a second language to non-native English speakers, no matter what there native language.  There are currently over 1 billion people around the world who speak English as a second language.  There are over 350 million non-native English speakers in Asia alone.  This number is greater than the population of the whole Unites States.  The future of education is global, mobile and personal.  This project will create a series of mobile apps that teaches English.  These mobile apps will contain artificial intelligence which will monitor a users progress in learning English and personalize the learning experience.  After using these mobile apps the user should be able to achieve Stage 3 literacy in English in less than 90 days.  Stage 3 literacy means that students will be able to read, write and speak English at a 9th grade level. 

The Impact

These global literacy apps will allow anyone with a mobile phone to learn English.  This will allow students in some of the poorest areas in the world to study English even if they don't have a teacher.  Learning to speak and read English will allow these students to avail themselves of more educational opportunities that are on the Internet.  I believe that education gives people the best opportunity to improve their health and standard of living and contribute their own knowledge to the world.

Risks and challenges

One of the risks of this project may be production delays. I will mitigate this risk by hiring an experienced director who has worked on projects in Hollywood.

Another risk is working with the artificial intelligence (AI) that will be in the mobile apps. I will seek out experts in robotics and take a course at Singularity University that focuses on advances in AI and other future technologies.

I will test the efficacy of these mobile apps by testing them on native and non-native English speakers in middle school.
