About Me
My name is Deniece Brown, I am 17 years old and a junior in high school .I am an active participant of the Harlem Children's Zone at the Employment and Technology Center and I have also volunteered at many organizations including Saint Luke’s Hospital, the Foster Care Advocacy program, and Flying Manes. During my time at St. Luke's Hospital I worked in the rehabilitation center, I helped create a PSA for the Foster Care Advocacy program, and through Flying Manes I worked with horses as a method of communicating and improving the communication skills of children ages 4 through 14 with disabilities. My goals for this year include the opportunity to travel abroad and volunteer in another country while broadening my horizons and getting out of my comfort zone.
Program Overview
Global Teens is a leadership development and service
learning program that engages teenagers (ages 14-18) in a
year-long empowering international experience, culminating with 2
weeks service abroad on July 15 - July 29, 2012. The program includes
deep personal growth, discovery, cultural awareness, meaningful service,
home stay experiences, and interaction with teens from around the globe.
The Impact
I have been selected by the International YMCA to participate in the 2012 trip to Brazil, where myself and 15 other teens will have the privilege to do service work which will address poverty and environmental education. The need to understand the interdependency of the world's many cultures, communities and nations has never been more important.
What I Need
Although this is volunteer work,
the International YMCA can only cover a portion of my trip, which cost $2800. I
am charged with fundraising the remainder of the cost which includes the plane tickets, room, and food. With your support I will
be able to gain a deepened sense of the social issues impacting our world, and
explore methods for positively contributing to our global community. I plan to
return and influence other teens to think of themselves as global citizens,
infuse a desire to communicate across cultural lines and spark their interest
in being civically responsible. I am do all that I can to fund raise this money by contacting city council members and government officials in NYC. I would deeply appreciate your help to allow me to take part of this amazing life changing experience
The cost for the trip will be distributed
$200 Passport fess
$100 Travel bag
$300 emergency money
$2,000 Plane ticket, Transportation
The remaining money will go to help to assist other YMCA global teens groups with fundraising.
