Hi, I'm Katharine Hayhoe. I study climate
change, one of the most pressing issues facing the planet today.
I don’t accept global warming on faith: I crunch
the data, I analyze the models, I help engineers and city managers and
ecologists quantify the impacts. The data tells us the planet is warming; the
science is clear that humans are responsible; the impacts we’re seeing today
are already serious; and our future is in our hands. As other wise scientists
have said, “We basically have three choices: reduce our emissions, prepare for
a changing climate, and suffer. We’re going to do some of each. The question is
what the mix is going to be. The more mitigation we do, the less adaptation
will be required, and the less suffering there will be.”
With a team from Texas Tech Public Media, I want to
start a web series looking at this whole climate change thing and what it means
to us; and with the big new Paris Agreement in place, and the rapid shifts in public
opinion we’re seeing across the United States, it’s an important time to do so.
In this series, we're going to tackle all the
climate change issues you’ve heard, head-on. How do we know this thing is
even real? Why do scientists say it's humans, and not natural cycles like
it¹s been every other time? Is climate change causing the crazy weather we
see today? Does fixing climate mean we have to shut down the economy? Why
are the Pope and the National Association of Evangelicals piling on? And
why do we climate scientists get so much hate mail? Money and politics,
God and global warming, every topic we avoid in polite conversation—we're
going there.
We are
looking to raise $20,000 to produce a web series of ten short videos, and we
want to do it right. Working with my local PBS station, we’ll be using
professional animators and top of the line equipment. We want to get people
talking about one of the most important issue the world is facing today.
Listed below
are a ton of cool perks for donating to the series, ranging from a speaking
engagement to reusable water bottles. If you’re ready, if you want to be a part
of this, you can help us make this series a reality.
We understand that not everyone can contribute, but
that doesn't mean you can't help. Feel free to get the word out and make some
noise about this series. Remember, Indiegogo has some cool share tools to help
you out.
Thank you!
