Gluten Free Around the World: The Short Story

Over 40 million people in the gluten-free community deal with a range of issues including gluten sensitivity, celiac disease, wheat allergies, autism spectrum, and many other medical or personal health conditions. For most of us, traveling and eating out isn't fun. Instead, it can be difficult, time-consuming, and unhealthy. After traveling around the world and back, all while eating gluten-free, I am determined to change this. We need your help to create this valuable travel guide resource for the growing gluten-free community!

Gluten Free Around the World: The Back Story

For me, going gluten-free after being diagnosed with celiac disease as an adult was both a blessing and a curse. On the plus side, I finally knew why I had been living with a stomach ache and related issues (celiac disease has over 300 symptoms!) for most of my life, and I held the basic information I needed to get back on the road to health and feeling normal.

On the downside, transitioning to a gluten-free lifestyle comes with a steep learning curve. Have you ever realized just how many foods are made with wheat, barley, or rye? Avoiding these foods might sound easy, but in practice, it’s incredibly difficult, since it seems as though gluten is in everything! Like all gluten-free eaters, I have to read every food label, maintain strict no-gluten rules in my food preparation areas, and ask way more food-related questions than anyone wants to answer.

And that’s just eating in my own kitchen! Eating away from home presents a whole new set of challenges and requires hours of research and menu reading, calling and emailing restaurants with questions in advance, and structuring a lot of my day around food. (Well, that last part isn’t so bad.) When I first went gluten-free, just the thought of all of the time, effort, and resources that went into planning a trip with food restrictions was enough to make me stay home.

Fortunately, after a few years, traveling gluten-free has gotten a little easier. Since I am a food and travel writer and editor by trade and an explorer by nature, I love nothing more than learning about new cities and cultures through food. I have become adept at seeking out healthy, safe gluten-free food in all corners of the world, and for the past year, I have written about these finds on my blog, Gluten-Free Jet Set. With this Gluten Free Around the World project, I’ll take this food and travel writing to the next level and provide you with worldwide gluten-free coverage in eBooks that you can access anywhere.

Gluten Free Around the World: The Project

Above all, this project is about the community of over 40 million gluten-free eaters, which, chances are, includes you or someone you know. Have you ever decided not to visit a city because you couldn't find a restaurant with a gluten-free menu? Canceled a trip because you didn't have the hours and hours to research safe places to eat? Had to eat prepackaged snacks for every meal instead of risking meals out in a country where you don't speak the language? These guides are for you!

Many excellent resources are out there to help people eat and cook gluten-free at home, but managing a gluten-free lifestyle while traveling remains a major challenge. With the complete Gluten Free Around the World guides in hand, gluten-free eaters will be prepared to eat safe, delicious, and healthy food wherever their business or leisure travel leads. Even better, since these digital guides will be in eBook format, they can accompany you anywhere you take your mobile devices.

On Gluten-Free Jet Set, I’ve already written about eating gluten-free in many popular destinations, including New York City, Washington DC, Seattle, Atlanta, Paris, Vienna, Berlin, Rome, and Tokyo. Over the next year, our team will visit, research, and write about the gluten-free experience in many more locations around the globe. Destinations that we plan to feature in the Gluten Free Around the World guides include:

  • North America: New York, Los Angeles, Maui, Las Vegas
  • Europe: Paris, London, Dublin, Amsterdam, Istanbul
  • Middle East: Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Tel Aviv
  • Asia: Tokyo, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Beijing
  • Africa: Johannesburg, Cape Town, Marrakesh
  • Australia & Oceania: Sydney, Bali
  • South America: Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro

The complete Gluten Free Around the World eBook will cover the gluten-free experience in major cities and regions around the world. The eBook will address challenges that travelers can expect to face; relay tips for navigating the local cuisine; outline basic terms and words in non-English-speaking locations; discuss region-specific gluten-free products; and highlight a variety of the best gluten-free options at restaurants, cafés, and hotels. The eBook will also tackle how to prepare to travel to these various regions, including what to expect on the airplane, in the airport, in the train station, and on the road. Each gluten-free city guide eBooklet will focus on a major city or region. The eBooklets will include additional city-specific information and recommendations. Each eBooklet will also feature a daily itinerary, with suggestions for navigating the city's main attractions while packing in the best gluten-free spots.

Why We Need Your Help & What You Get in Return

Researching, writing, editing, and self-publishing these guides takes serious commitment and funds. Because we see a HUGE need for this comprehensive resource, we are dedicated to making it happen. We have already funded and planned for the research portion of the project. We've mapped out the destinations, planned travel and logistics, and connected with locals.

We need YOUR help to produce the final products. Your generous contributions will make it possible for us to share this extensive research, knowledge, and experience with the rest of the gluten-free community. Your help will allow us to publish the complete world eBook guide, Gluten Free Around the World, AND a series of city gluten-free guide eBooklets. You'll also get to travel vicariously with us for a year, as we send you exclusive updates, tips, and photos from abroad.

We're asking for $18,000 to achieve these goals. We know that's not small potatoes, and we want you to know how important any and all of your contributions are to this project. In return, our fun perks include one or more city eBooklet gluten-free guides, a copy of the complete Gluten Free Around the World eBook, a gluten-free travel planning consultation, and a box of our favorite global gluten-free goodies. Want to have a voice in the book? The biggest contributors can help us expand the scope of our research by funding the inclusion of an additional city of their choice.

We think our goal is achievable with your help, but if we don't make it, we will have to scale back our offerings. Rest assured that your contributions will still go to the production and publication of the city eBooklet gluten-free guides and will continue to help the gluten-free community.

Risks & Challenges

This is an ambitious project, but fortunately, we are prepared to take on the risks and challenges involved! Our team is trained and experienced in all components of this project, including travel planning and logistics. Anna is an experienced food and travel writer as well as a trained book and photo editor. Loren is an experienced multimedia and web producer. Together we are the perfect team to launch Gluten Free Around the World. We are committed to producing nothing less than professional finished products. As the ultimate gluten-free travel dream team, we can't wait to make travel easier for gluten-free eaters.

Other Ways You Can Help

Even $15 helps us to get closer to our goal, but we know not everyone can or wants to contribute financially. You can help in other ways, too!

  • Follow us on Facebook or Twitter and share our daily posts highlighting a city and cuisine featured in the project.
  • Share the link to this campaign with your family and friends via email. Most of us have at least one gluten-free friend or family member!
  • Subscribe to our Gluten-Free Jet Set newsletter for regular updates on the project, upcoming destinations, and release dates for the city eBooklet gluten-free guides.

Thank you thank you thank you for all of your support!!
