Overview
2007. Ellipsis Stephens was dreaming about being a comic book artist full time. She went out and pursued that dream with the support of the incredible Danielle Stephens. 10 years later we have the genius of Goblins Comic for all to see! 2012. Matt King starts poking at Ellipsis to make Goblins Animated, using a lot of pretty pleases. 2016. The Amazing Phil LaMarr jumps on board and the whole thing takes off. 2017. You help bring this to life!

GOBLINS is the story of a D and D realm told from the point of view of the little guys, the "monsters," instead of the adventurers. It's a heroic tale of a group normally considered evil and weak. Think Smurfs meets Game of Thrones.

What's Goblins Animated? It's the cartoon version of the Goblins Comic. Matt King (GI:Joe Renegades, World of Warcraft), Phil LaMarr (Samurai Jack, Futurama, Mad TV), and Ellipsis Stephens (Creator, Goblins Comic) have adapted Goblins Book 1 into ten episodes of animated awesomeness! Our friends Billy West, Maurice LaMarche, Jim Cummings, Tara Strong, Matthew Mercer, Jennifer Hale, Steve Blum, and more amazing Cast Members have agreed to come onboard, grab a +1 sword of sharpness and help bring these characters to life!

Ellipsis Stephens

Ellipsis Stephens first tried to place her comics on the internet as a child in the 80’s. Discovering that this would be an almost impossible task until the internet was invented, she tried again in 2005 with much greater success. As a child, Ellipsis drew scores of comics, mostly involving Dungeons & Dragons. She was inspired by other comics like Elfquest, Heavy  Metal Magazine and Dragon Magazine (well you know, the back of Dragon Magazine… where the comics were).

Danielle Stephens

As the other half of the two-wife team, Danielle Stephens has managed the comic since 2005. She is the Production Coordinator for Goblins Animated. She writes the Hyper Halfling line of RPG supplements, and is an occasional event organizer. She's known locally as a rather good french horn player.

Matt King

Matt King is the winner of the CAPE/Hollywood Foreign Press Young Screenwriters Award and the creator, writer and director of The World of Steam; a Twilight Zone-like seasonal anthology series set in a Steampunk universe. The World of Steam is now being developed in partnership with The Jim Henson Company with the goal of bringing a Steampunk TV show to life! Matt has appeared on numerous TV shows, as a series regular on the shows Washington Field and GI Joe: Renegades, and has appeared on everything from Friends to BonesFrasier to 24. He is most noted for his roles on POWERS as THX, and on Numb3rs as Agent Matt Li. Matt is also widely known for voice work as Illidan Demon Hunter in Warcraft III, Tunnel Rat (GI: Joe Renegades), Sumaru on Naruto, Simicore (Transformers: Robots in Disguise), The Pandaren PC (World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria), Master Windstrong (WoW: Legion), TMNT: Don Vs Ralph as Splinter and Shredder, Fright Rider (Skylanders), and many more. Currently, he can be seen on CBS's Code Black, FOX's Lucifer and heard on Studio Ghibli's Only Yesterday, as well as the hit games Agents of Mayhem and Injustice 2. Matt was also a judge on the Steampunk reality show Steampunk'd. Matt lives and works in Los Angeles with his wife and three children.

 Phil LaMarr

Born in Los Angeles, an alumnus of Yale University and The Groundlings Theater, Phil has spent a LOT of time with animated characters. Who knew Samurai Jack, Hermes from Futurama, and Green Lantern John Stewart from Justice League would start as “Woody” on the Mr.T cartoon? Phil is best known as one of the original cast members of Mad TV, as "Marvin" in Pulp Fiction and for appearances in TV shows and films like HBO’s Veep, Epix's Get ShortyCurb Your Enthusiasm, Grey's Anatomy, Men, Women & Children, Step Brothers, and Free Enterprise. After roles in video games like Metal Gear 2 & 4InjusticeShadow of Mordor, Dead Island, Mortal Kombat X and Marvel Vs Capcom, and animated series like Family Guy, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Young Justice, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Netflix's Kulipari, Cartoon Network's Craig of The Creek and starring in Tyler The Creator's new series, The Jellies for Adult Swim, Phil is excited to use his experience to help bring Goblins Animated to life.

  1. In attempting to crowdfund Goblins Animated we realized that attempting to raise the funds for a full episode of animation was an immensely difficult hill to climb even given the level of amazing talent and expertise that we are bringing to the project.
  2. But we want to stay true to to the tone, humor, depth and quality of the comic. So our aim going forward is to create a presentation piece that really shows off the full wonder of Goblins Animated as we envision it.
  3. With the level of saturation in the current media environment, it is necessary to create an immersive experience to break out of the pack and get something made. As such, a five-minute fully produced Goblins Animated presentation goes a long way towards pushing us to that goal.
  4. This also allows us a chance to reconfigure the campaign to work towards our strengths and incorporate the feedback of our supporters.
  5. We know you, as fans of GOBLINS and great animation, have an interest in seeing something like this happen, and we love the idea that you guys will be involved and be given the opportunity to help it along the way! If you come, we will build it!

Risks and Challenges

The Cast:

Our cast includes Emmy-winners, world record holders and beloved childhood icons - basically some of the best voice talent in the world. As such, scheduling around their very busy schedules, making sure their paperwork and union requirements are filled, as well as renting the space to record them are just a few of the logistics necessary. We realized that going in, so we've prepared for over a year to make sure that we have all of the necessary pieces in place to put creatives in a space to create. Phil LaMarr and Matt King have decades of experience as professional performers and are committed to bringing the Goblins comic we all love to life as an animated series.

The Animation:

On the technical side, we have the task of creating a fully-realized animated piece. Even though it's not a full episode it's still quite expensive and difficult. It requires hiring directors, character designers, background artists, doing sound, music, post-production and much, much more. Guiding us through this we have the talent and expertise of Johnny Bravo's Van Partible and Jeff "Swampy" Marsh's (Phineas & Ferb) Surfer Jack Productions to advise us and help make sure that we are bringing our backers the best possible product.

The Rewards:

Matt King has already been through the wringer of creating and producing rewards for his backers on The World of Steam. The scale of the items produced for that show was staggering, and taught Matt a lot about how to budget, produce and effectively release rewards in an efficient manner. We've also worked hard to be certain that we have budgeted accurately for both the production and the rewards.

Ellipsis has struggled in the past with getting goodies out on time, but now she has help, and Matt's really good at it! If the production scales to a full 10 episodes, then we will be hiring a fulfillment company and we have budgeted for that eventuality.

Ellipsis:

Since Ellipsis and her supporters were ripped off by the company that was supposed to make Goblins: Alternate Realities, Ellipsis has worked for years for NO money to try to make good on people's donations by herself. This is a testament to her desire to give her fans what they deserve. This time around there are no strangers. We've known each other for years. We've taken the time to vet, research and carefully prepare. Also, we have really good American entertainment lawyers this time. :)  http://goblinscomic.com/gar/the-goblins-card-game

Matt:

With The World of Steam, Matt learned a lot about the process of a successful crowdfunding campaign, as well as Hollywood's response to a successful creative endeavor.  With Goblins Animated, the Team has laid down all of the legal paperwork up front and done everything else we can to ensure production of an animated Goblins can start as soon as we are funded. Having Matt, Phil, Ellipsis and Dani as partners in the endeavour gives us a great set of brains to make sure this thing is always driving forward.

Under budgeting was a huge challenge to The World of Steam. It meant that the speed of the production slowed as Matt was forced to do things himself. As such, Goblins Animated has made sure that we are adequately budgeted and have the staff in place to help us cover any potential challenges.

The World of Steam has now become partnered with The Jim Henson Company and with John Hyde (The Neverending Story, Lost Boys) to come to television. Matt has maintained a constant set of updates with his backers about developments on the show and all of the trials and tribulations. He's used these hard experiences to make sure that Goblins Animated is prepared for the problems that he's solved and that Goblins Animated has the budget and the help it needs to get the job done.

Mailing rewards:

The US Postal Service, as of this writing and our budgeting, had not yet released its 2018 rate increases. We've included a contingency estimate in our budget, but as we can't read minds, our estimate could conceivably fall short. We think we've covered our bases, though.

SPECIAL THANKS:

Special thanks to so many people who got us to this point. It definitely takes a village of Goblins to get this done! Thanks to Dorrie LaMarr for hugs and letting us invade her house and pretend to be Goblins for so many hours, Catharine King for patience, understanding and cookies, Swampy, Van, Lance, Craig, Dota, and all the folks at Surfer Jack for your expertise and time, L Dillon Thomas and Will Hooke for many many hours of editing, Seth Podowitz for putting your beautiful tunes into our world, Evelyn Kriete for your internet savvy, Ashley Briskman and the lawyer horde who got all our contracts done, Drisa Carrizo for your accounting and corporation help, Kara Vallow, Claudia Katz, Stacey Wilson, and Asa Tait at Psychic Bunny for letting us borrow your brains and experience, Patty Woo for lending us your house and talents, Laina Cohn for always being there, Jonathan Taub for all the answers, Shawn 'Shawny' Reed for all the help with the rewards and icons, Marem Hassler and Karl Landler for manning camera and lights so ably, Peyton Skelton for being a shooter's dream, Micah and Lisa Reid for trekking from Vancouver and shooting in the woods, our children who have given of their love and time and of course all of our fans who have put up with silence and question marks.
