ABOUT THE FILM"God's Atheist" is an independent short film intended for festival submission. The project will be directed by P.M. Usanga in New York City during late summer 2011. The film while playful with its humor and contemporary urban setting tackles large issues of religion and the afterlife.
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENTWhen I first read “God’s Atheist” I was struck by a powerful connection to the story’s message. I always felt uneasy about the notion that people who were of the “wrong religion” would be barred from heaven. Instead the film’s universal concept of heaven strongly resonated with me. The idea that all people who lead good lives are eligible for heaven is an important statement that I believe in communicating. In a world where people fight over different perceptions of God, the film seeks to illustrate God as a unifying rather than divisive force. Furthermore, in making a film with a broad audience in mind, I want to create an opportunity for black actors to depict roles that are not conventionally cast with African Americans. In making “God’s Atheist” a reality I hope to address relevant contemporary issues that are very dear to me.
