Overview
GOFF explores the life of an iconoclast and chronicles the events that led to the destruction and renewed interest in his memory and dwellings.

Why I'm Telling this Story:

We all live in different shaped and sized containers. In Oklahoma we move from one box to another a majority of the time. But within this sea of boxes is a logarithmic spiral emerging from that square system. That is how I found Bruce Goff. That single spiral symbolized in my mind the philosophy Goff explored called the continuous present, the idea of living in the past and present at same time. I wanted to know what that mean to him and it took me on a four-year journey of discovering who the man was behind such a unique structure. Bruce Goff completed the Bavinger House in 1955 while also chairman at the nationally recognized University of Oklahoma architecture school. Goff was well regarded in his time by Frank Lloyd Wright and cited as an influence to both Frank Gehry and Philip Johnson. Why did Goff not attain the same level of canonization in the architectural world? That’s exactly what I wanted to know and that is what this documentary is about.

Film Synopsis:

Bruce Goff was one of the greatest American architects of the 20th century. His unconventional perspective challenged stigmas about the Midwest’s inability to produce innovative work. A peer to Frank Lloyd Wright, his work had a profound influence on the next generation of architects, including Phillip Johnson and Frank Gehry. However, Goff’s willingness to explore unprecedented forms often solicited polarized perspectives of his work. As a result of establishing his practice in an otherwise conservative landscape and his unabashed desire to experiment with the possibilities of form, much of his work has been left to decay or forgotten altogether. GOFF explores the life of an iconoclast and chronicles the events that lead to the destruction and renewed interest of his memory and dwellings.

Director's Bio

Britni Harris is a director/producer/editor who has spent the past 5 years exploring the peculiar and concealed stories throughout the corners of the Midwest. Her exploration of the eccentric documentary filmmaking world began at a young age when she was invited to assist filmmaker Ben Steinbauer while he completed his documentary Winnebago Man. From that point on she was fascinated with documenting the obscure facets of human life. After receiving her degree in filmmaking from the University of Oklahoma she started working for Food Network TV show Pioneer Woman. She transitioned into commercial editing and camera operating for the ad agency Brother’s and Company. She has gone on to collaborate with Bradley Beesley on his upcoming documentary film Fathers of Football, Viceland’s TV Show Hate Thy Neighbhor, American Documentary’s TV Show America ReFramed, and producing various indie films throughout Oklahoma. She has dedicated the past 4 years directing/producing GOFF, the documentary, about architect Bruce Goff who also spent his life discovering the atypical beauty of Midwestern design.

Your Contributions:

The money you donate will go to covering the remaining costs of post production for GOFF. The main cost is for purchasing the rights to footage from a BBC documentary called "We Don’t Like Your House Either!” I have looked in every corner of the Bruce Goff archive and this is the only film footage I can find of him. The remaining amount of your donation will go to helping finish the editing process so the film can be done in 2018.
