GOOD GRIEF is a dark comedy about eight estranged friends who return to their childhood hometown in order to attend the funeral of their best friend, comic artist Cory Burns. The film explores the unique qualities and dysfunctions of these friends who, even before they unpack their bags, discover they each have become a stark contrast to their nostalgic childhood that Cory based his comic on.As we enter
the sleepy mid-western town, one by one we are introduced to everybody. Lewis is a newly ordained
priest. His crabby older sister,
Lacey, is a therapist who seems to be on the verge of losing her mind. Lacey’s ex-finance, Ricky, is an
alcoholic, washed up jazz pianist.
Pepper, a fashionable tomboy, is still trying to figure out her place in
this world. Pepper’s life
partner, Darcie, is a workaholic having a difficult time being present. Also in attendance is Benjamin, a successful novelist suffering from writer’s block and a broken heart. And finally, Penn, the local ladies man
who’s cleaned up his act in recent years.
“Good Grief”
is meant to make the audience feel like a fly on the wall. A glimpse into the
possible lives of people we all grew up with as children and make us wonder,
“Hey, what happened to them?”
The tone and
pacing of this film are like those in
Beautiful Girls, Rachel Getting
Married and
The Big Chill. We have 98% of the film in the can, but we need awesome people like you to help us finish it. Your contributions will go towards editing, color correction, sound, pick-up shots, promoting the film, music, and getting it into theaters.

A bit of a fashionable tomboy,
Pepper is sort of the wild
child of the bunch. She’s still trying to find herself but is completely
unapologetic about who she is. She’s having trouble accepting the truth about
her friend’s passing and seems to be behaving even more irresponsible as a
result. But if she isn’t careful she could be in jeopardy of losing someone
else very dear to her heart.
Not much is known about Cindy as no one has seen or heard
from her in years. Her troubled childhood lead to her leaving home at an early
age but she’s resurfaced in order to attend the funeral of her brother, Cory.
She’s done with the past but the past might not be done with her.
A bit rough around the edges, Ricky is an amazingly talented
jazz pianist who just can’t seem to get out of his own way. His affinity for
the bottle has more or less burned both his personal and professional bridges,
including his relationship with his now ex fiancé, Lacey. He returns to his
home town to pay respects to one of the few friends he had left. Hopefully,
he’ll be able to get through this weekend without causing too much trouble, but
not likely.
Somewhat of a local legend, Penn has made quite a turn around from
his formative years. Once an extremely
unkempt loiterer he’s since cleaned up his act and is now an active member in
the community. This change of pace
has somehow led him to being a bit of a ladies man as well and is known by
many women in town as the jerk that got away.
Darcie is deeply saddened by the loss
of her old friend, but the timing could not be worse for this workaholic who has a
huge client she needs to keep happy back home at her accounting firm. It’s also
putting stress on her relationship with her girlfriend, Pepper, who is less
than pleased with her lack of attention this weekend.
A newly appointed man of the cloth, Lewis has always been
the group’s shoulder to lean on. But his patience and his faith will be tested
this weekend as he tries to keep his cool while trying to accommodate his
friends needs, the pain of his best friend’s death and the unforeseen return of
Cindy, the girl that got away.
Lewis’ sister, Lacey, could not be more different. A
therapist who always seems to have a chip on her shoulder, she’s doing
everything in her power to keep her wits about her. Although with the loss of
one of her only friends, her career in jeopardy and being forced to be around
her ex fiancé, Ricky, this weekend may be a bit more challenging than she had
originally anticipated.
A novelist suffering from a severe case of writers block,
Benjamin has always been the voice of reason within the group. Although a
recent heartbreak may result in him having a slight lapse in judgment this
weekend.
