Short Summary
My name is Thomas Eiden, and I am a Nuclear Engineering Research Assistant at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I have some really neat ideas for software for Google Glass, but I need help purchasing it.
I remember watching a movie many years ago, where a researcher was using a camera to record the behavior of some lab animals he was studying. I always thought that that was a pretty nifty idea. When I heard about Google Glass, an idea clicked--why not use Glass to aid in research like the guy in that movie? A hands-free camera could have all sorts of great uses for many different fields of research.
For instance, if someone in medical sciences was studying the effects of a new drug on lab rats, the researcher could make a video log stating the work they are about to perform, and take video of the rat's behavior, which could be reviewed by others at a later date. A botanist or geologist could have a hands-free camera in the field to snap photos. Someone performing pipette work or studying bacteria cultures could use Glass to scan a bar code on test tubes or petri dishes to keep track of work that has been performed. A nuclear engineer could record the assembly of a complicated test setup... the possibilities are endless.
All of this could be used in conjunction with electronic lab notebooks which are growing in popularity, or simply augment paper lab notebook entries. Glass could revolutionize the field of scientific research.
I have friends in many different fields of research, so I will be able to get specific ideas from their firsthand experiences to tailor this software to specific fields.
What We Need & What You Get
I am seeking to raise enough money to participate in the Google Glass Explorers program. As a graduate research assistant, I cannot afford Google Glass on my own, as it currently costs about one and a half month's wages, and my invitation to buy Glass expires in one week.
I am looking to raise $1500 to purchase the product. Extra funds will go to purchasing the mono-earbud ($50), which will be incorporated with my idea and extra funds beyond that will go towards development of the software.
The perks include signed thank-you cards, recognition, and free software to show my appreciation.
This is a lightning campaign--If I cannot reach the goal by 12/16, I will not be able to purchase Glass, as I only have a week before my invitation expires. I am choosing the all-or-nothing option as $1500 is a relatively small amount of money for a campaign.
Other Ways You Can Help
If you do not wish to contribute money, please forward this to a friend whom you think will be interested in this project! Thank you!
