Introducing GPS 4G HAT

The GPS 4G HAT is an expansion board for the Raspberry Pi and similar SBCs. It is equipped with a GPS module and IoT-ready data transmission using NB-IoT and LTE Cat-M1. Additionally, multiple connectors allow to easily add other components and modules for a quick integration in your existing projects.

Build your own GPS tracker or something even better

The GPS 4G HAT is an expansion board for the popular SBC (Single Board Computer) Raspberry Pi. As the name already reveals, the board provides an easy way to add GPS and 4G data communication to your projects. To complete the feasibility of creating a GPS tracker there is also a 3-axis-accelerometer placed on-board to implement wake-on-motion scenarios.

Multiple connectors additionally provide you with the opportunity integrating more components to your project; extending its possibilities beyond pure GPS tracking. To make the integration a breeze, we also provide a software library and examples.

Quick setup

  1. Plug the GPS 4G HAT onto the Raspberry Pi
  2. Integrate the software library into a new or existing project
  3. Start using the GPS 4G HAT and let your imagination flow

Why the GPS 4G HAT?

Having a background in developing GPS trackers for consumers, we know that such devices can be used to cover a range of scenarios. But they also come with their limitations such that very specific use cases cannot directly be targeted.

And that is the anchor point of the GPS 4G HAT. Its focus is the freedom of implementation. You have an idea that involves GPS tracking and data transmission? Good. Take the GPS 4G HAT and give it a try. When common devices are not able to cover your use case, the your imagination and the GPS 4G HAT can.

If you have questions or need assistance just reach out to us, we are happy to help.

Application

Basically, all projects that benefit from GPS tracking and data transmission can integrate the GPS 4G HAT. Some general use cases are:

  • Tracking of goods
  • Prototype development
  • Setting up experiments (for educational purposes)
  • Building a security system
  • Using sensor-triggered events (such as motion) to start the GPS tracking
  • Combining GPS data with additional data from other connected sensors/resources and sending this information via 4G to another endpoint
  • And a lot more.

Features

  • 4G module with support for NB-IoT and LTE Cat-M1
  • SIM card slot and therefore free choice of provider
  • Integrated GNSS module with use of GPS and GLONASS
  • 3-axis accelerometer with support for wake-on-motion
  • 3 built-in LEDs:
    • 2x LEDs to inform about the status of the communication module (power and network availability)
    • 1x LED  to be used in your project
  • 2 buttons:
    • 1x button to reset the communication module,
    • 1x button to be used in your project
  • I²C connector for external sensors
  • 4 digital inputs (2x optical isolated)
  • 4 digital outputs (2x optical isolated, 2x max. 1 A)
  • Measurement at the signals RxD, TxD, SCL and SDA via separate pin headers
  • Operation in temperature range from -20 °C to 70 °C
  • The pin header of the GPS 4G HAT is pin compatible with the Raspberry Pi 2/ 3 / 4 / 5 / Zero
  • An open source software library to enable communication between the shield and the Raspberry Pi

Hardware

The GPS 4G HAT is connected to the Raspberry Pi via the 40-pin header.

It uses the Quectel BG77(0) module with Cat M1 and Cat NB2, and integrated GNSS. The switching interval between GNSS reception and data transmission may take approx. 1 minute. Having the powerful MCU of the Raspberry Pi for handling the data processing, the GPS 4G HAT is not equipped with a separate MCU to reduce the energy consumption.

The GPS 4G HAT is ready to be shipped

The GPS 4G HATs are produced and ready to be shipped.

Because we know that it sometimes can be tough to find a proper arrangement to receive a good GPS signal, we decided to include an external GPS antenna with the GPS 4G HAT. Thus, giving you more flexibility in your setup.

Risks & Challenges

As with any hardware project, there are risks and challenges associated with manufacturing and supply chain logistics. Apart from that, the global pandemic has put pressure on supply chains everywhere. The resulting chip crisis and significant chip shortages have created difficulties in the electronics industry. There is the possibility of delays in this project, but we have built sufficient buffers into our schedule. We are committed to the highest level of transparency and will keep you informed of any delays or issues as they arise.
