Gray Area: Wolves of the Southwest
We are a film team of two; myself Alan Lacy, and expert cameraman Dean Cannon. Together we have embarked on a journey to tell the story of the Mexican wolf, also known as the "lobo." We recently completed our first film shoot in the Mexican Wolf Recovery Area in March of 2014, and are seeking to return again this summer. We have exhausted all our own personal resources and time, and are turning once again to you for help. Thankfully, the Wolf Education and Wildlife Center (a 501c3 non-profit organization) has come to our aid allowing us to receive tax-deductible donations for anyone wanting to take advantage of the great tax benefits! So now we just need your help, as we can't go any further without it! We have great footage of scenery, wildlife, and awesome interviews, but we need to film the stars of this show; the Mexican wolves!
To me this is more than just a film, its about ensuring there is a future for this species, and this film can be the difference. We are seeking to generate much needed awareness for this species through a compelling film that will feature the Mexican wolf as never seen before. We will explore the many complicated issues that surround wolf recovery in the Southwestern United States, and seek to find a balance to understanding the keys of a successful recovery.
I have been following the Mexican Gray Wolf Recovery Program for the past nine years, and have seen their population numbers fluctuate up and down. For many of those years, their numbers rarely rose above 50 wild wolves. Today, roughly 85 call the wilds of Arizona and New Mexico home. This film will help create awareness for this species in a visually and compelling way. Dean is an exceptional videographer, who has filmed around the world for clients such as:
Dean brings a high level of experience and expertise to ensure that we capture the best moments, the elusive shots, and the highest level of cinematography around. We know the finished film will be composed of amazing footage that will be of broadcast quality.
The Numbers
We are asking for your help so that we can go back to the Wolf Recovery Area this summer. We want to capture footage of Mexican wolves in the wild, and to do this we need to spend as much time in the wilderness as possible. This gets expensive, especially when the cameras are rolling days on end. We have trimmed us much as we can in our budget to make this possible, and we need your help to get us out there. Here’s how it breaks down:
The budget for this two week shoot includes the following expenses:
Rental Equipment: Cameras/Lenses/etc
Filming Permits
Travel Expenses (Including airfare, hotels, car rentals, etc)
Location Costs
Insurance
Shooting Budget: $25,000
We are offering a tax benefit for your donations as well, thanks to the Wolf Education and Research Center! They are a 501c3 organization, and our fiscal sponsor, allowing you to make a tax-deductible donation! These funds will help ensure that the we can generate as much awareness as possible for the Mexican wolf, ensuring the success of their future!
Weekly Goals
We have selected a 45 day campaign here on Indiegogo. This means we are going to try and raise more than what we need for our upcoming shoot. We would like to surpass our minimal goal for funding so that we can continue right on into 2015 and complete this project. This means we would ideally like to raise at least $60,000 to finish production of this film. It sounds like a lot, however it goes quickly when hiring editors and sound design for a film like this. We want the best opportunity to eventually recieve a national broadcast. This means spending a little more to reach a much greater audience in order to create more awareness for the Mexican wolf. Here are our weekly goals we ideally would like to meet! Please help us reach them!!
Week 1 Goal: 10K
Week 2 Goal: 20K
Week 3 Goal: 30k
Week 4 Goal: 40k
Week 5 Goal: 50k
Week 6 Goal: 60k

Full leangth feature documentary.
National Broadcast
Education in classrooms, including curriculum.
Assist with awareness and education with those involved in Mexican wolf recovery.
Multi-media outlets for greater public outreach, and understanding of wolves.
