Gwen had worked for decades as a nurse in Canada's north. And she was good at it. Her aboriginal and Inuit patients trusted her. Her colleagues valued her expertise. And then things came to an abrupt stop. Gwen had blown the whistle on an incompetent nurse; one whose practice was later associated with the death of a 3 month old baby boy. What did the Government of Nunavut Department of Health, her employer do? They fired Gwen and ordered her never to return to Nunavut. They cut off her livelihood for doing the right thing. And they promoted the incompetent nurse. How devastated personally and professionally could one nurse be for following all the rules. Gwen fought fearlessly to protect the residents of Cape Dorset, Nunavut. Her 3 year fight for what was right has finally come to resolution. The incompetent nurse has agreed to all the allegations presented to her. Her license has been suspended. Gwen's selflessness and moral, professional and ethical duty has also come at a great price. She is a heroine in the nursing community and a true angel to the many Nunavummiut in Cape Dorset and elsewhere who are safer now because of her. Gwen deserves our tributes and help in rebuilding her financial ruins as a result of the horrendous treatment she received from her former employer. Her aged mare just passed away and she barely hangs on to a few horses that she has left now on her small farm property. Below you will find the links to this very sad story and the nurse who was willing to speak up and do the right thing:
