About the Film

Hand-Drawn: Documentary is an indie feature-length documentary about the art of 2D drawn frame-by-frame animation. Featuring interviews of both independent and mainstream animators who are keeping the medium alive whether for filmmaking, TV productions, video games, or otherwise. Those from all different corners of the animation industry in North America and overseas discuss in-depth where this foundational art form is today since it began more than a century ago.

Our Progress So Far

Our first crowdfunding campaign's success has been invaluable to our project, most notably funding a jam-packed West Coast trip to LA, San Francisco, and Portland where we interviewed many amazing animators and animation professionals from our original list and several surprise interviewees too, including James Baxter, Floyd Norman, Craig McCracken, Joe Murray, James Lopez, Dan Haskett, Ross O'Donovan and Jorge R. Gutierrez just to name a few of the 35+ animators we have interviewed so far.

It also funded interviews with animators in other parts of the USA with Aaron Blaise, Joanna Davidovich as well as and many more! We have also filmed many interviews in Europe; including in the amazing animation industry of France with Benjamin Renner, Elea Gobbe Mellevec and many more. We also interviewed Irish 2D animation directors mentioned in our previous campaign; including award-winning Cartoon Saloon animation filmmakers Tomm Moore, Nora Twomey, and Louise Bagnall.

See our sneak peek reel and proof-of-concept video above to see some of the many amazing animators we have interviewed so far!

The Filmmakers

A filmmaking duo formed between me (Felicity Morland, director, pictured middle), and my husband Aidan Fantinatto (associate producer). Our shared life-long passion for all things animation continues to inspire us to set out on an exploration to discover the universal appeal of hand-drawn animation, its history, and its ongoing adaptive course.

Along with a few animation-enthused family members and friends in our small crew including, Liam Fantinatto who has worked on nearly every shoot as camera-operator and production assistant.

As well as Documentary Producer Robert Fantinatto, who has overseen Hand Drawn so far. His 10+ years of experience working on "I Dream Of Wires" and the upcoming "Electronic Voyager" documentary have assured that production flows as smoothly as possible.

Together, we have been capturing this inspiring story full-time since the beginning of this year.

What's left to do now?

Soon we will take a production trip to Japan and one other small USA trip to capture our essential final round of interviews and footage for the film. We're getting closer to completing Hand Drawn, however, in capturing so many extra exciting unexpected interviews and bonus content for the film and special features, the scope of our production has increased significantly and these unforeseen expenses have now completely exhausted our funds.

Why Indiegogo?

The main aspect I have particularly enjoyed with Indiegogo is the involvement with the backer community and the film's audience.  The encouragement I received during the initial campaign and continually during the production process and the feedback, conversations, and stories that everyone has shared about their love of this medium has inspired us to make the best film we possibly can.

I never expected to have experienced this amount of overwhelming support, and I am so grateful to be backed by such an amazing community!

Since the first campaign, this project has become a much more comprehensive story than we first imagined. Our already modest budget has been stretched to the absolute limit; realistically, the budget for this project is easily more than double, even triple, what we have raised so far.

We are currently looking into other funding options to help us complete the project, and have already begun to approach some potential sponsors and distributors. The response has been encouraging, but this always takes quite some time, and so Indiegogo provides an amazing service to our production: quick access to funds, allowing us to continue to work on this project every single day to make the film to the highest quality possible.

We're now asking for your support via this finishing funds campaign on Indiegogo, to cover some crucial unforeseen costs and post-production expenses. But we're not just asking you to hand over your hard-earned money; we're excited to announce the exciting PERKS on offer as incentives for you to support our project including the first-ever official Blu-ray of Hand Drawn!

Expenses Breakdown

  • Funding our filming trip to Japan.
  • Post-production expenses include editing, colour-correction, and sound mix.
  • Music and rights fees.

Raising the funds is also vital for our final film shoot in Japan and a few other remaining important shoots, as well as supporting us through our editing phase. We must capture the incredibly influential hand-drawn animation from the anime industry and the perspective of creators at SPA studios, specifically about the new traditionally animated feature film KLAUS.

Stretch Goals

$30,000 - We will be able to hire post-production professionals to help finish our film to an even higher standard at a faster pace! To sweeten things, even more, a "Digital Animator" pin will be made available and sent to backers who selected a perk that includes a Hand Drawn pin.

$35,000 - The extended cut: Hand Drawn - Animator's Dream Edition + more bonus content will also be produced on Blu-ray and sent to backers who selected a perk that includes the Blu-ray!

$40,000 - ??? (more exciting stretch goals to be unlocked)

Risks & Challenges

We must emphasize that we are determined to complete this film to the highest standard possible, regardless of the Indiegogo fundraising outcome. That being said, without this support it will be quite challenging to complete this project to the best it can possibly be - we wouldn't have gotten to this point without the faith and generosity of our Indiegogo campaign contributors, and all contributions here will directly enhance and expedite completing this exciting documentary.

We’re looking to our friends and followers to help us reach our goal – not only through your generous contributions, but also by helping spread the word, and sharing this page and sharing it often!

We don't anticipate any other major risks or challenges with this project, but in the unlikely event that issues spring up, we will discuss them here openly with our backers.
