Short Summary
In July 2013, seven high school students and two adults will travel to a rural subsistence area in Western Kenya. The Harambee Inc.–Kenya volunteers will live with the people in the community. In the morning the students will volunteer at the medical clinic, assist with babies at the orphanage, and do arts & crafts with disabled children. During the afternoons they will attend school with the secondary Kenyan students, visit their homes for lunch and enjoy many activities such as soccer, dancing and singing, movies, and sharing foods from each other’s cultures. The senior Kenyan students and the American students will share a bus trip where both groups of kids will see Lake Victoria for the first time. At the end of the week all of the students will join with the rest of the village to build a footbridge using muscles and simple tools (no machines!). The footbridge will connect the communities of Mandugu and Uluthe, joining approximately 16,000 people. Kids who currently walk/run for 2 hours to get to school will be able to walk across the bridge to get to school in a fraction of the time. Residents of Mandugu will have better access to markets for their farm produce. Our mission is to build relationships, learn together, and build a bridge between two communities and two cultures so that we can all know the value of.
What We Need & What You Get
- Our goal is $22,000. Included in this cost is $2,000 per volunteer (9 total) for travel expenses, and $4,000 in supplies for the bridge and other activities such as a field trip to Lake Victoria with Kenyan students.
- If you choose to support our campaign and donate $50 or more we will send you a personalized letter, accompanied with a photo, from one of the volunteers detailing their experience in Kenya.
- We hope our goal of $22,000 will be met, but if it is not then our first priority is to fund the supplies for the bridge and field trip with the students. Any leftover funds will be split evenly among the volunteers to ensure everyone has the opportunity to share in the lives of Kenyan students.
The Impact
- On our journey to Kenya this summer we will be building upon previous relationships and connecting communities. By contributing you will help Uluthe and surrounding communities grow and develop independence.
- Since 2008 Friends of Africa Education and Harambee have built a school, a medical clinic, helped develop organic sustainable agriculture, and improved their water and sanitation enriching the community and future generations.
