Story of My Book
Hard Work Is Not Enough is a book about developing the soft-skills required to be more believable, strategic, and influential at work.
I am Jeff Shannon, the author of Hard Work Is Not Enough. I wrote this book because I listened to advice claiming that to move up in the organization, all you had to do was become an expert in your field and work harder than anyone else. As many managers and aspiring leaders do, I quickly learned this approach builds a reputation of dependability, but dependability doesn’t equal influence. I felt stuck until I realized I needed to change my strategy.
My hope for this book is to help you increase your influence with your team and organization. It’s a book filled with stories of people just like you and me who became experts and worked hard to end up frustrated when what got them there wouldn’t get them where they wanted to be. They had to transform themselves by building the often overlooked soft skills to reach their highest potential.
I want to instill in you the same sort of passion and excitement that I have for personal development and growth so you can achieve your goals. Ultimately, I want you to see this book as a tool to help you make a lasting impact on individuals, teams, and your company for years to come.
In this book, you’ll learn about being more believable and strategic in your work. You’ll hear stories such as...
- How to know when it’s time to change your career strategy
- How letting some fires burn can lead to greater productivity
- How your instincts might be making you a bad people manager
You will love this book if you are up for a challenge. This book isn’t for everyone, but if you’re interested in learning what attitudes and behaviors will help you be more influential and maximize your potential, then it’s for you.
Hard Work Is Not Enough is a nonfiction book that speaks to people managers and aspiring leaders who want to look at leadership and influence differently to achieve different and better results.
The Book - Hard Work Is Not Enough
The book is written in three parts.
Part 1 is about transforming your behaviors (introduction + chapters 1-3). I make a case for believability and how your soft skillset is equal to and, in many cases, more valuable than how smart you are or how hard you work.
Part 2 is about transforming your thinking (chapters 4-7). I synthesize years of leading businesses and helping companies build strategy into principles and frameworks to help you think strategically.
Part 3 is about transforming your leadership (chapters 9-12 + the conclusion). I help you put it in action with models and practices, so they become part of you and how you create value and lead others.

Risks & Challenges
The biggest challenge with publishing a book is delivering the finished book to the backer, specifically my mailing of the book to you. I have eliminated this risk by including the cost of mailing and shipping the signed copies into each pre-order tier.
The risk of delivering the pre-sale copies of my book is contingent on the publisher we use. I will be working closely with New Degree Press to ship the pre-order rewards to you as early as possible. We will keep all pre-sale backers up-to-date as to when my book will publish. You will know when the copies of my book you pre-ordered are expected to ship.
