Heidi Van Horne's "Making Over Molly"

Post Production Crowdfunding Campaign

In the summer of 2012, Heidi Van Horne brought her 1960 F100 pickup truck from her home in Los Angeles back to her hometown of Houston for a rebuild with the help of family and friends.

Heidi Van Horne, that's me.  I'm most known for being an actress, retro pinup model, and author of the weekly column "Heidi's Pics" (on the cover of the Houston Chronicle Cars' section every Thursday!) but to my family and friends, I'm just a goofy, hard working dreamer who's had a few tumultuous years and needs a bit of help getting things back in working order - both on my awesome truck, Molly, and - to be honest - on myself.

Coming back to my hometown to tear it all down and build it back up again is the story I have to share.  It is one with lots of laughs, tears, time on the road and under the hood, complicated family dynamics and the occasional celebrity cameo.

Let's talk about what this is & what it is NOT

It is the story of a girl and her truck, which actually follows the classic Hero's Journey story structure of storytelling.

This is a slice of my life.  The good, the bad, the ugly.  It involves: the victories and pitfalls of wrenching on a classic truck; killer hot rods, customs and classics; beautiful pinup girls and burlesque gals; gritty shops; glamorous photo shoots; family-friendly car show appearances; and parties with rough and tumble bikers and hot rodders.  Just the average mix that makes up my daily life.

It is NOT a reality tv show or a pitch for a project where my family and I fight and bicker and belittle each other for 22.8 minutes in 2.3 minute scripted scenes to shill crap for corporate sponsors.  It is a true, small-town-girl-struggling-to-make-good, feel good story that explores how family, circumstance and environment influence who we are and who we choose to become - all the while watching a classic American truck go from ailing and broken down to freshly rebuilt in the process.

What I Am Asking For & What You Get

I was able to raise enough funds and support on my own to do the truck rebuild, launch the project and make it happen, but it could not have been done without the help of my family and friends, including some amazing crew members who came on board with nothing more than a belief in me and my project, and the desire to help be a part of it.
This Post Production fundraiser is strictly to raise the remaining funds in order to:
  • finish paying off my incredibly talented and supportive crew (who are approximately 2/3 paid off at this point
  • professionally film the final interviews
  • acquire any necessary stock footage.
Of course, this will also help cover:
  • cost of the perks and getting them to you
  • required fees (here on IndieGoGo and through credit card/payment services, which make up between 8%-12% of the final $ raised)
If you help me meet and then EXCEED my goal, all the additional monies will go toward future costs of the film:
  • fees to enter film festivals
  • music licensing fees
  • postage
  • printing
  • DVD copies to send to fests, industry contacts and potential distributors.
If I DON'T reach my goal, I will still receive the funds raised, and will pay off as much of the crew's remaining deferred rates as possible.  This option, unfortunately, also means that a higher percentage of what was donated will go to fees and fundraising costs rather than the intended use of funds (CREW PAY!)  Either way, every bit helps.

The Impact

By supporting this campaign, you aren't just helping me personally, you are helping to support independent film (the only real answer to the horrid crap that Hollywood wants us to buy!) and you are helping to support a film with a strong female lead and a female producer and director, enriching the message to the world that women are just as capable as men to take the lead - whether that means rebuilding their own transmission or creating a feature film.

(Did you know that only about 6% of film directors in Hollywood are female?!? Yet we comprise 51% of the population?!  AND women represent only about 30% of roles in film and television programming!)

  • This story is about a strong FEMALE LEAD, whose story arc revolves around getting her hands dirty working on a classic truck, the dynamics of her life and family (not just trying to woo some dude or win a freakin' beauty pageant.)
  • You are helping me branch out from the shorter form projects I've worked on (like 2009's "Fit To Rock" workout DVD and the in-progress short film "Tactile Learning") and co-producing and assistant directing other people's projects (like festival winner "Graveyard Diary" and the Winkytiki "VIMBY" shorts) to DIRECT and PRODUCE my first FEATURE FILM.  You are helping me succeed and being a part of taking my film making career to the next level!

So, please, BUY a PERK!  Contribute financially and you literally help make my movie happen and you'll also get some nifty stuff in return.

Other Ways You Can Help

Clearly, I am here to raise funds, but I don't want you to think that $ is the only way you can help.  Every time you repost this link, email it to friends or otherwise help spread the word, YOU are helping to make this happen.  The way that crowdfunding is successful is by expanding your reach - so every little "insignificant" CLICK on a like, or share, is part of the support network with which this will get made.  So, if you can't chip in with money in exchange for one of my kickass perks, PLEASE please please spread the word in any way you can!  It is just as important to my success!

  • SHARE this page on your social media pages - Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Myspace, Tumblr, blogs or any groups or clubs you might be a part of!

  • EMAIL this link to any friends who you think might be interested - whether they will want to contribute or just watch the final film when its done.  Gearheads, Pin Up Fans, or even just folks who appreciate a good story.
  • TALK about me!  Yes, I want you to gossip!  Tell your friends, tell your enemies, tell strangers!  Any way that you can help keep the buzz going ultimately helps raise the consciousness of the project.  I like to call this, "seeping into the collective unconscious" - they may not contribute or share right now - or even remember the name of the film or me - but the next time they hear about it or see it, there will be a mental connection.  This helps, too.

So there you have it.  Me, my truck and my movie.  I will be adding a few perks as we go and introducing you to the other main characters in the film, so check back for updates!

And now, with all my sincerest love and gratitude, HERE WE GO!!!
