New Mexico is recovering from the financial impact of the pandemic lockdowns which devastated our hospitality industry. The nationwide broadcasting of our film may greatly benefit New Mexico, bringing attention, enthusiastic visitors, increased commerce, ski enthusiasts and increased cultural tourism dollars.
New Mexico has a young and growing film industry, mostly with studio films that come to us from LA or New York. Awakening in Taos, LLC was created to produce this film, and to tell stories about real people who live or lived here. Our film company is based in Santa Fe, New Mexico and this film was shot and produced in Santa Fe and Taos with all local above the line personnel, cast and crews.
Awakening in Taos is a love letter to New Mexico. A historic biographical documentary about activism, Hispanic and Native American cultures, 20th Century history, and the enchanting beauty of southwestern landscapes. It informs those who live here and inspires outside audiences to want to visit our state. It tells the story of a charismatic, independent writer, a trailblazer for women and Native American Rights. A champion for equality, Mabel Dodge was 100 years ahead of her time.
Mabel came from a wealthy, established New York family. In 1917 this philanthropic socialite made the unlikely move from Greenwich Village to Taos, New Mexico. She broke with her Victorian upbringing, embraced modern ideas and Native American culture. At a time when it was unheard of, Mabel married Tony Lujan, a full blooded Tiwa Indian from Taos Pueblo. The couple attracted worldwide attention and brought the most famous artists, writers and philosophers, the movers, and shakers of their time, to this remote artists' colony. It was the last vestige of the wild west.

The Impact of your contribution:
The fight for women’s right to vote in elections is known as the ‘suffragette movement’. By the end of the 19th century, this had become a worldwide movement, and the words ‘feminism’ and ‘feminist movement’ started to be used. Mabel was an early adopter in the first wave of feminism that resulted in women gaining the right to vote. Because of her independence, wealth and influence she became a living example of the “New Woman”.
Young women today take for granted the freedoms that women like Mabel fought hard to win. She was also a champion for Native American Rights, fighting to break down the social stereotyping, prejudice against interracial relationships that allowed non-natives to exploit and suppress first nation peoples.

Direct payments to our non profit arts foundation: . Not everyone is comfortable with online financial transactions. We encourage backers to make their donations online here to be added into the total Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign. Several donors have chosen to mail in checks directly Recursos de Santa Fe, our fiscal sponsor, adding adding $5,000 to our total budget pledged.
While the crowdfunding site says how much we have raised online , at this time we actually have brought in an additional $5,000 from private sources that do not show up in our daily campaign report.
