Friends:
I (and Bonfire collective) need your help
We are trying to bring three amazing radical musicians, who themselves
are active in a variety of struggles, to our town for two shows in Isla
Vista, April 27th and 29th. They are members and associates of the
Riotfolk! musicians collective (
www.riotfolk.org).
Evan Greer is a Boston-based radical queer singer/songwriter and
community organizer who sings "songs of hope, justice, and liberation
and connecting with communities who are resisting oppression" - on tour
with their partner Erin and baby Saoirse! Ryan Harvey has been a folk
musician and activist touring and organizing extensively in the
Wisconsin labor uprising, the anti-war movement, organizing veterans
against the war, and in the Occupy movement and his songs deal with
everything from justice for Palestine, to building solidarity in
struggle, to the racism of the Tea Party movement and more. Bonfire
Madigan is an incredible cellist, composer, vocalist and activist who
started in the Riot Grrrl scene and has worked with acts like Cat Power,
Bright Eyes, Fugazi, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and more.
In order to
create the amazing experience of bringing these musicians to Santa
Barbara (at Isla Vista's own Space 777!), we need to be able to provide
the musicians funds for tour. They are travelling on a shoestring
budget and both Evan and Bonfire Madigan are touring with children to
support. We will ask for donations at the door but rarely does this
provide the needed funds to make a decent living on tour, much less
support babies along the way. We especially need help for Evan and
Bonfire Madigan; they have suggested that at least $400-$500 will be
needed to help them break even with tour, living and family costs.
YOU can help bring these incredibly talented folks to spread inspiration and struggle in our town by:
1. Asking an organization or group you belong to to "co-sponsor" one
or both of these musicians by donating $50 or $100 dollars in return for
free admission of 5 or 15 members of your organization. This can be a
STUDENT GROUP, COLLECTIVE, CLUB, CO-OP HOUSE, ACTIVIST ORG, BUSINESS,
BAKING BRIGADE, SECRET AGENT SQUAD or anything else. This would be
incredible. Please be prompt if you choose this option - the sooner I
know the sooner I can pass the information on to the musicians. Message
me and I will provide you with tickets.
2. Personally donating funds to bring these musicians to town. Any amount helps. Message me for details in this as well.
3. Helping me get university funds for at least one of these shows. I
don't belong to any student orgs and I'm graduating this quarter. I'm
not sure how I can go about this - I know some of you are super amazing
on-campus organizers; if you can lend any knowledge or help in this, it
would be much appreciated.
4. Spreading the word and coming to the show.
