Fernando's life has never been easy. He was born to a very poor family in Quito, Ecuador. His parents were immigrants from Colombia who made a living selling leather goods from their truck, and while their life was never uncomplicated, they were able to support their family with these efforts. Unfortunately, Fernando's life changed forever at age 12. On a trip back to Colombia, a drunk driver hit the car his parents were traveling in, killing both of his parents and his grandmother. At this young age, Fernando and his sisters were left without family and forced to fend for themselves. While he did his best to look after his younger sister, she became pregnant at a very young age, forcing him to take care of an additional new family member and corresponding set of complications. Fernando has worked very hard to provide for his family, but the road has not been easy. He has had to put his education on hold because schooling means temporarily limiting his earning capacity, which is not an expense he can incur with the constant constraints imposed by providing for his family. While Fernando continued to work in hopes of one day going to school, all of his future aspirations and responsibilities are now in a state of great peril, and he is in a desperate situation. After a tire on his car exploded and caused the vehicle to roll over and crash into several trees, Fernando must now pay fines for the accident, an impound fee for the return of his vehicle, and a hefty repair bill to return it to functional condition. His finances make this completely impossible to achieve on his own, and life has left him without others to help him in his time of need. If he does not earn the funds he requires to remedy this situation, he will be unable to transport himself to the odd jobs with which he supports his family. It is extremely urgent for the well being of Fernando and his family that he regain the ability to support them with his vehicle, and there is simply no one to help them but the larger global community.
