Introduction

Hello! I am Keziah Elizabeth Edmunds, the youngest of eleven children and am seventeen years old. I am residing with one of my sisters in New York for the summer while I work on some projects, the biggest of which I would like to explain below. Right now I am applying for summer jobs, taking classes at a local community college and am also enrolled in the supplementary program Kumon, a Japanese method of learning.

After making it through the first hurdle of standardized testing, college essays, college, scholarship and financial aid applications, and college visits, I made my decision. I was thrilled to be accepted into 11 well-respected colleges, and have chosen the one that I feel most comfortable with, Mary Baldwin College in historic Staunton, Virginia. They have provided me with the best financial aid package out of all my schools, so that makes me even more anxious to have this work out! They are a great school - and I was very impressed by their programs and faculty during a recent visit - but now I must look at my financial liability, starting for the Fall 2013 semester.

Financial Details and How You Can Help!

I need to show Mary Baldwin College, the school I have chosen, that I am able to pay $7,760.00 by June 1, 2013. I know - that is really soon! Here are the numbers:

The financial aid package from Mary Baldwin per academic year:
Annual tuition:           $37,120.00
Scholarship:               $17,600.00
Money I have earned:   $4,000.00
Total balance due:      $15,520.00/two semesters

                              =  $7,760.00 per semester

The remaining balance is due on December 1, 2013.

Now you may be wondering why I don’t just take out loans. I have considered loans, and they are still an option. However, my goal is to become a surgeon, and I know that loans will be practically unavoidable in medical school. The residency following graduation typically pays very little, so I would like to delay taking out loans for as long as possible so that I can take advantage of any learning opportunity without financial strain.

This, combined with the lack of economic resources large families (I have ten siblings) are known for, means that I have to swallow my pride and reach out to see who might be interested in helping me find and fund my way! I am hoping that with your help, I will be able to not only meet the ending liability, but to surpass it so that I do not have to take out any loans for at least my first year of college. I am pacing myself for the long-term, as having to finance many years of higher education lies ahead of me.

If you feel more comfortable donating straight out of your checkbook, please make checks payable to Keziah Edmunds, with “2013 Mary Baldwin Tuition” written in the memo. Please contact me for an address to mail the check to.

Prizes! Incentives! Oh My!

To show my appreciation for your support, I have various prizes that will be unlocked as I get closer to my goal for those who contribute on indiegogo.

Other Ways You Can Help

I know that its a tough economy and maybe you simply can’t contribute financially right now, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still help!

Whether you can contribute financially or not, will you offer your advice and wisdom? What do you wish you did differently during your time in school?

What were some tools that really helped you?

Will you consider supporting me during future semesters?

Will you tell others whom you think may be interested in my cause and ask them to support me?

You could share my cause on facebook, with your church or community group, or with someone you know who has an interest in furthering medical research.

Thank you

Regardless of the amount of support you are able to give right now, and even if you are not able to give at this time, thank you for taking time to read this letter (you could have been watching your favorite tv show, taking a nap or finally changing the batteries in your smoke alarm) but instead you have read all the way to here. So thank you for caring.

Please let me know if you have any questions! Thank you for being part of my difficult but inevitably rewarding journey.

Gratefully,

Keziah
