Nariha was 14 when she fled her home to avoid a marriage. Nariha was close to graduating from primary school when she stood up for her right to education.

Less than one quarter of Tanzanian girls attend secondary school, one of the lowest rates in Africa. This is a huge problem not only for the girls, but also for the world at large, because educating girls is the best way to reduce poverty. Kofi Annan counseled, “Study after study has taught us that there is no tool for development more effective than the education of girls. No other policy is as likely to raise economic productivity, lower infant and maternal mortality, improve nutrition and promote health — including the prevention of HIV/AIDS. No other policy is as powerful in increasing the chances of education for the next generation.”  Girls' education has proven successful and important in so many ways. We want to empower Nariha to be successful and to act as a leader in her community.

The cost for her four years of secondary school will be about $2500. This is where you can help – by donating even $20, you will be contributing to educating and empowering a brave teenage girl and can help her reach her full potential.

Nariha is a strong student, she is heartbreakingly kind, and she deserves this education and opportunity so much. If we work together, Nariha can achieve her dreams. Thank you, asante sana (Swahili for 'thank you very much'), ashe na leng (Maasai for 'thank you very much')!

Please check out obrienschool.org to see more about Nariha's primary school, where I was lucky enough to work last year.
