Our Story

I am a second year medical resident raising funds for a 2 week medical mission in Kenya. I have no memories of the first time I traveled to the African continent. Only a year old, I was oblivious to the impending war that would engulf my parent's homeland for decades. 36 years later, I am returning to the continent of my ancestors. This time with medical supplies, my training, and a team of UC Davis Medical students. Traveling with Dr. Neil Flynn, an HIV specialist who has worked in Kenya for many years, we will be providing primary health care to people in Nairobi and rural Kenya. Many of these people will walk miles to see a physician for the first time.

I realize that given the limited amount of time I will be in Kenya, I am limited in the effect I will have. But even on a meager salary as a Resident, I had to find a way to help. Some of my time will be spent working in orphanages, particularly with children exposed to HIV. I will also deliver medicine and medical supplies to Kenyan health care workers with limited resources. Funds raised above travel costs will be used to help purchase additional medical supplies.

I didn't travel the usual road to becoming a doctor. I entered medical school as a single mother of 3 year old. I endured the rigorous training with one goal in mind - to help vulnerable communities. I knew International medicine was a path I had to take. As a Resident I am limited to doing rotations and providing medical care under the auspices of an institution. This trip will allow me to distribute antibiotics, lance abscesses, and splint broken bones to patients with no other recourse.

The Impact

Many of the people I will help in rural Kenya will have never seen a physician.   As a family practice physician I am trained in basic surgery, casting, suturing wounds. I envision that I will be using many of my procedural skills as well as being able to use my diagnostic skills for common medical problems. In the US many of us go to the doctor when we have a small headache or a non-healing wound, the people I will work with in Kenya don't have that option, so my hope is to do my part to relieve the suffering of the patients I will be privileged enough to serve.

In addition to the patients I will be working with, I will also be working with first year medical students both from the US and Kenya. The cultural exchange that will occur will be invaluable to to all of our future patients.

What We Need

I need funds to cover my travel and expenses. Any additional funds raised above and beyond will go towards medical supplies.
