This article by Bethany Matta in al-Jazeera is about a young Afgan woman, Sadia, who has endured horrific beatings, strangulation, and severe genital mutilation at the hands of her husband. She may no longer be able to have children. The story really horrified and moved me, and I want to help her. I think she's very brave.
Sadia's husband was a member of an illegal militia, who are known in Afghanistan for their human rights abuses of civilians. She now needs help with her legal costs (the Afghan legal system is not favorable to women, to say the least), medical costs (including exams and plastic surgery, if she wishes, in India), and re-establishing her life.
Sadia has a case manager who is taking excellent care of her and not letting this get swept under the rugs. All care will be taken on the Afghanistan end of things to make sure the money is used as intended.
Please help with this one. Sometimes it feels like it's hard to make a difference for abused women and girls; the money here will go a long way toward helping Sadia begin the healing.
