Hello everyone!

As of January 7th, I will be on the ground working for Exponential Education with the goal of furthering opportunities for middle and high school students in Kumasi, Ghana. This will be my second long-term excursion to West Africa, though my first to Ghana. I am committed to Exponential Education's work and all of the  money raised in this campaign will go directly to Expo's programs. Their work is remarkable and their various programs are impacting students in tangible ways. As test scores are improved students are able to stay in or continue with school, tapping into the incredible resource found within Ghanaian students. With your contribution, Expo will be able to expand their programs, ensuring more students get the support they deserve. Expo's staff (including myself) are not in Kumasi to teach our own classes. We support Ghanaian teachers and rely on their input to shape our programs. Their feedback is essential, and together we aim to bolster the future of Kumasi's students. Education is the foundation on which any nation can rise. An educated and empowered populace pours forth doctors, nurses, social workers, business leaders, and politicians.

My own interest in international development sprang from a long standing curiosity with the world and other cultures. I grew up hearing stories from my family members' experiences in various places around the world... Saudi Arabia, Germany, Ecuador, India; just to name a few. My curiosity shaped the information I pursued and I became more informed as to the structure of international economies, vibrant cultures, and unequal systems. Curiosity had morphed into something more: a sense of responsibility and commitment to bettering the world I live in.

The Goal

With this campaign, your contributions will bring Exponential Education the support they need to continue their work: building the foundation Ghana's students need for them to realize their potential. Here's how your money will grow our programs:

-Increase the number of tutors in our Peer to Peer Program, ensuring more high school students can afford their tuition fees and more middle school students get the singular attention they need. $60 pays for 1 tutor for 1 term; $300 pays for 5 tutors for the term; $500 pays for an entire program, including the tutor scholarship and snacks for students.

-Allow Expo's Tutoring Center for college advising and test preparation for SAT/GRE to continue at a quarter of the price of other tutor providers. These funds go back into our other programs.

-Expand the Girls' Leadership Program and offer more supplemental materials for those groups. $200 pays for one Girls' Leadership Program.

-Expo's Teacher Training Program would benefit from farther outreach, more training materials, and increased attention to newly hired teachers.

When you make a contribution, make sure to detail it is for Exponential Education, Ghana as it goes first through an organization called Empowerment Works.

The Impact

Reaching the $2,000 goal for this campaign will help these programs not only continue their work at current capacity, but allow us to expand. With expansion comes more schools, more students, and more materials to make our programs the best they can possibly be.

The success of Exponential Education can be seen in our scholarship winners and test scores of students, please click here to see for yourself.
On average, Expo observes 100-250% improvement in basic math and English scores from original levels.

Risks & Challenges

As a young organization, Expo relies on your support to keep their programs operating. While Expo's wok has been recognized on several platforms, including the Dell Social Innovation Competition and the Africa Development Summit of 2012, we still require funding from a broad base of contributors. Ours is the only organization of this kind in Kumasi so our lack of funding directly impacts the effectiveness of not only programming, but the future of Kumasi's students.
