About Us

El Valle Women's Collaborative is a collective of women from the Pecos River Valley near Ribera, NM. Inspired by our passion for community and love of the land we pulled together what money we had and rented a space to gather. In sharing our experiences and dreams for the community we concluded that when women and families have the opportunity to share their skills learn from each other and support each other, our communities become stronger.

Our areas of focus are Health and Wellness, Economic Development, Leadership and Civic Engagement and Women, Children and Families. In less than a year we have already made strides in these areas by launching a community thrift store based on "gift economy" where customers name their own price or barter for items. Additionally we have created a safe place for women to gather and thus supporting and strengthening a way of being in the world that honors women's knowledge and wisdom. As a result of engaging the women in our community they have assumed leadership roles in program development, fundraising and community outreach.

Currently, we have the privilege of renting the perfect piece of property that has been historically significant in our community. Location is everything and this is no less true for our organization. The owner of the property wishes to sell. We have until November 2013 to raise $54,000 for a down payment on the property. The property has three buildings which house our resource center, thrift store, future program facility and an orchard that hosts our farmer's market.

Impact

Contributing to this campaign is about more than purchasing a building. This is about making a difference in the lives of families.  Like many rural communities in New Mexico we face economic and health disparities. However we recognize that our community is rich in human capitol. We are farmers, artisans, healers and teachers. Your contribution will help us to mend and strengthen community ties that have been cut or worn down by generational poverty.

EVWC is building partnerships with the schools, churches and our local health clinic to engage women, youth and families in programs that promote health through food sovereignty.  Also we are organizing with local farmers at a grassroots level to provide youth with educational workshops on bee keeping, animal husbandry, and food justice. For families we are seeking to offer cooking classes, build a seed bank, and teach strategies for using EBT to purchase seeds, plants and organic produce. Not to mention that we also encourage gathering for fun such as movie showings, creating a community garden, potlucks, craft nights and spa nights.

El Valle Women's Collaborative is rapidly becoming the heart of the valley. It’s almost unbelievable that we have created such momentum with just the little money we had in our pockets. Imagine what we will do with your donation!
