In March 2014 a fire broke out in the apartment directly above our school at 72 Warren Street. It triggered the fire sprinklers and flooded all of the floors below, including our administrative offices and performance space! Luckily no one was hurt in the fire and most of our classroom space was spared.
However, parts of our school sustained significant water damage and must be completely renovated before we can inhabit them again.Good news:
We have insurance!
Bad news:
Parts of our school are unusable and insurance will only cover a portion of what was destroyed.
Thank you to the Tribeca Trib for creating the video below. Click here to read The Trib's article about the disaster.

The insurance timeline for rebuilding estimates that it will be
6 months before we can use our space again but we need to fix things now so that we can focus on what's most important: making more music and more art with our amazing students!
Our computers were ruined as well as other technological equipment, chairs, desks, phones and musical instruments (including our director’s piano). Funds from this campaign will go to replacing necessary equipment so that we can get our offices up and running.
We need you to help us get back on our feet so we can continue providing the best music and art education to the families of New York City.

Church Street School is a not-for-profit arts school and community center in Lower Manhattan. We are a creative centerpiece of the neighborhood where students of all ages and backgrounds come to learn, play music, make art and connect with one another.
Since 1990 we have been teaching music and art classes in Tribeca and our alumni have gone on to become successful musicians, artists, actors, photographers, university professors and poets. Last year we gave out over $40,000 in scholarships for private music lessons, preschool, after school art classes, teen programs, summer camps and more.
We are professional teaching artists, musicians and educators who love what we do and believe deeply in the importance of nurturing the creative voices of our youth. We are driven by the idea that music and art are the keys to cultivating creative minds, self expression and confidence!

Church Street School is a community keystone. We’ve taught over 10,000 students and we believe that inspiring students of today to be better problem solvers, creative thinkers and communicators starts with an education in the arts.
For almost 25 years, Church Street School has survived. In the face of a changing neighborhood, September 11th, the 2008 recession, Hurricane Sandy and intense competition from for-profit educational centers, we have weathered it all because of the amazing support of the downtown community and our conviction that art in New York City is worth saving.
As arts education is downsized in public schools, we fight to offer affordable classes and scholarships so that all families have access to art and music.
Help us keep creating and keep inspiring our students!

If we meet our goal and raise $40,000 or more, we’ll also give our preschool and afterschool art classrooms a face lift with a coat of fresh paint, new shelving, storage, art supplies and art tables!Your contribution is greatly appreciated, but you can also help by spreading the word. Let friends, family and coworkers and anyone else know about what happened to our school. Share this campaign with them and let them know that Church Street School is as important to you as it is to us.
By making a tax deductible contribution to our fund you’ll help us to keep providing inspiration, creativity and self discovery for students in New York City. We need your help so we can make more music and make more art!
Thank you for your support and believing in the power of the arts!
