Help us teach kids how to code in Colombia
Coderise.org is a non profit that empowers kids in developing nations by teaching them how to code. This opens them to a wealth of opportunities for upward social mobility that they would otherwise not have in their country.
Often in developing countries upward social mobility depends on being born to the right family, having the right skin color, going to the right private schools in the right city. When a child is able to participate in the global economy as valuable contributor to the digital revolution, many of the local historical barriers to personal development are removed. Coderise enables that.
In our free 9 week program, they learn the basics of computer science with javascript, HTML and CSS and in the second half of the program, students learn how to build products by solving problems that either they face or those in their community. Each weekend we bring role models that are either successful engineers and/or tech entrepreneurs to share their experiences. The program ends with a demo day with parents, peers, journalists and entrepreneurs.
With our fundraiser last year, we were able to buy the 20 computers needed for the programs in Colombia, and launch two programs helping around 36 kids ages between 13 to 18. Now we are aiming to launch two more programs this year, we already have the computers, now we need money for transportation, food and logistics.
One of our goals is to remove any obstacle that can keep the teens from assisting the classes, that means getting to and from the classes, with transportation money we can assure even the poorest of the teens can still have the opportunity. Food, weel... no one thinks good on a empty stomach, specially someone who probably went strait from school to coderise, is not a 7 course meal, but a sandwich and a juice box will help them get through the lesson.
you are probably are thinking, what are the logistics?, well, logistics is everything we that needs to be done in order to complete the program, like paying the transportations for the volunteers (teachers and mentors), t-shirts for the team and students, diplomas, etc. Usually we have allies and get some in-kind perks but some times we just get a discount.
Almost 5 years ago, thanks to your support on Indiegogo, we raised enough funding to get the organization off the ground. Today, we have successfully completed 7 programs, in 5 cities reaching more than 136 kids.
Our first pilot was in the city of eternal spring, Medellín, Colombia. 20 kids graduated from this program and we got the support of the Javascript community in this city. After that, we've done programs in:
• Medellín - 2014
• Popayán - 2014
• Medellín - 2015
• Lima - 2015
• Tegucigalpa - 2016
• Sabaneta - 2016
Our goal in 2017, is to do another program in Medellín and open a new branch in Bogotá, Colombia.

What is the cost to students for the program?
It is completely free, and we also grant them money for transportation and provide a small meal.
How much of my donation will be used for administrative costs?
None, our staff costs are sponsored by Socialatom Group. All the money from this crowdfunding campaign will go straight to the programs.
What programming languages do you teach?
Javascript. We compliment that with HTML, CSS and as students bring their products to life, firebase and other relevant tools are used depending on their project.
