Help us to save
The Grain Tower
The Grain Tower,
which has been decommissioned as a military building in 1956, remains derelict
and unused till today. It’s been privately owned since 2005 but none of the
owners did anything with this historically important building to bring it back
to its previous glory.
Our aim is to
restore it and made it available to general public as an observatory of
diverse, local wetland bird population. Its tower, with several levels, will be
perfect for both scientific and pleasure observation.
We strongly
believe places like The Grain Tower should serve general public free of charge.
Enough of these places have been turned into luxurious hotels which with its
prices remain inaccessible to majority of us.
It is a designated
Grade II listed building (from 1986) as well as a part of Scheduled Monument
(nationally important historic building) – our aim will be to keep it
accessible to general public and serve it in manner which will help preserving
our flora and fauna.
There is a possibility of The Grain Tower
being sold to the next owner before we will finish our collection (it is
available to buy and we have to bear that in mind) – in such a case we
will short-list 4 equally important and neglected sites and ask all the participants
to vote for their choice.
What we need?
To buy and restore
a building like this will not be easy and cheap. To keep a restoration in line
with its requirements of the Great Listed building we will need at least
£2,000,000. Additionally, this money will allow us set a base on shore, which
will help us in later stage to maintain the tower.
