Why Housing Assistance matters to Veronica's kids
I'm Veronica's former neighbor and close friend, and I know how important it is that she and her children keep their rent assistance
- to stay together as a family under one roof
- to keep a solid home base for school
- to avoid the heartbreak of losing their belongings
Veronica's housing assistance pays most of their monthly rent right now, and it caps her rent at 30% of her income. Without it, she and her kids will lose their current home. And they have only about a week to come up with the money to keep it.
The family shelter in St. Paul is a day shelter where families are bussed at 5 pm to churches to sleep. Let's all pitch in now to keep Serenity, Butta, Juicy, Jawon, Ariah and Johny from being the kids on that bus.
What we can do
Only $500 will settle Veronica's differences with her former landlord and prevent an "eviction" strike from ending her housing assistance. If everyone who cares pitches in just a little bit, we can help them over this hurdle.
Your small contribution now will be multiplied each time the rent gets paid--this month, next month, and for many months to come. It will matter every time the family uses their home as a base for success in school and work.
Any funds contributed will go directly to Veronica's settlement with her old landlord.
Anything leftover will go directly to the family. It will buy an affordable family swim pass or pay for a good fan for their second story duplex. However generous or humble, your gift will keep on giving all summer long and into the future.
Like the kids in the 60 minutes video link attached, Veronica's kids have suffered a lot from scarcity. This campaign can show them that they're not in this struggle alone. They're surrounded by people who care, who believe in them, and who know they deserve a safe, stable home.
Joining hands was never easier
Indiegogo, Facebook, and Twitter make lending a hand and combining small contributions easier than ever before. Putting out a small fire now often prevents a disaster later.
We can pick up these tools and use them when people we know and love are facing a housing crisis. We can take a stand against poverty instead of turning our heads away from the growing number of kids living with less.
Consider it "volunteer firefighting" against a different sort of threat to a family home.
Please spread the word
Every little bit helps. Through this campaign, we'll add whatever you can afford to whatever the rest of us can afford until we have enough money to make a difference. Even if you have no cash to spare right now, you can still share the love, spread the word, and help the cause.
Post this campaign on Facebook and twitter--wherever you can. Add your messages of hope to Veronica and her whole family. Give them something to celebrate this fourth of July.
Let the kids know you care!
