Hideaway
Howdy! My name is Eli Cooper. I am a second year Cinematography Fellow at AFI (American Film Institute). I am currently in pre-production for my capstone project for the cinematography discipline at AFI. Hideaway is a 3-minute story shot entirely on 35mm film and told with only visuals and music, absolutely no dialogue.
Some of my first memories were watching old westerns with my grandfather. Ever since then I have been in love with the image of the cowboy. My goal with Hideaway is to both pay tribute to the films my Grandfather introduced me to, but also to tackle themes of masculinity, sexuality, and identity.
Hideaway is a story of desire and yearning for connection. It is a gay cowboy love story. The film follows Al, Al is lonely, steadfast in his ways, he struggles to let anyone see past his stoic, masculine front. He thinks it’s safer to watch from the sidelines rather than play the game and possibly lose. When he sees Frank, the pull of something more is too much for Al to resist and he’s forced to confront what he really wants - connection.
