Hives for NC's Homeless & Helpless

Honey is a valuable and renewable resource. Your contribution to our IndieGoGo "Hives For the Homeless & Helpless" helps create a renewable product whose sale proceeds are directly used to feed and warm those in need in Durham, Vance and Warren counties in eastern North Carolina.

The honeybee is an amazing creature.
  • An individual bee only makes about 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey during her life.
  • A total of 40,000 miles are flown to produce a single pound of honey! The honey pictured to the right represents nearly 6 trips from New York's JFK airport to London's Heathrow airport and back!
  • While this may seem a lot of flight miles, a hive of honeybees may contain between 20,000 to 60,000 bees and one queen. In both a bee hive and in crowdfunding, many hands make for light work.
  • A single hive may produce 100 pounds of valuable honey annually.

Bees aren't the only things busy at Holland Farms. We focus our time on helping those in need in our community. For the past 6 years we have been providing firewood and warm meals to those in need. This outreach isn't directly related to "keeping bees", the money made from the sale of our local, raw, wildflower honey is the life blood of feeding the hungry, bringing firewood to those who are cold, and providing a place for those who find themselves displaced.

Big ol pot of Chicken n' Dumpling hot lunch served to 75-100 folks were in crisis, hardship, and/or homeless, on Wednesday, Jan 2nd in Durham.

Make no mistake, as it is clearly stated in Matthew 6:21 we put our treasure into service, and invite you to help extend that outreach!

Your contribution to this IndieGoGo campaign helps:

  • Established 30 healthy bee hives with proven survivability genes.
  • Increase annual supply an estimated 1,800 gallons.
  • Create a renewable resource whose sale proceeds directly impact low-income individuals and families.
Here are some of the ways we use our resources at Holland Farm to help our community:
  • We have a mobile kitchen and we love to go out and serve FREE meals to those in need. We assist other groups who are reaching out to assist others at no charge. Our ability to feed the hungry is directly tied to our ability to pay for it!

  • Each year we help folks in Warren and Vance county out with firewood, most at no cost (95% of them!). Many elderly and disabled persons in this economically depressed area still heat with wood. No wood means no warmth. We have taken easily over 100,000 lbs of wood in the past two years and look forward to doing it as long as we are able.
  • Our bee yard supports more than bees. It is part of how we reach out near and far to help our community and those in it. We invite you to join us in making a safer more comfortable community for both bees and people alike!

We were blessed to be able to share these sweet potatoes with those in need, shelters, churches, pantries, outreaches, and all who could use them.
