Overview
Welcome to my Hometown! I'd like you to take a tour of the city. In our busy and transitory days, I think it's important to have a study about being homesick and about what happens to your hometown while you’re off living your life someplace else. When was the last time you went home?

About the book

It's been 4 years now since I've been constantly taking photos of my hometown, without being able to explain to myself why. I found out just recently, while working on this book. The answer is: I feel homesick. Obvious? Rather not... For me, the feeling of homesickness is not about the romantic image of a sunset at the hangout place, nor the smell of baked pies made by my grandmother.  My feeling of homesick lies beyond, floating somewhere around all those familiar places.

I've always felt the ghostly atmosphere of my town, but now, after years of being away and visiting only once in a while, I became aware of the impact that migration has had on small cities. I realize I've also contributed to it myself, the day I left my hometown. Therefore, this project became like an archive where I store the places that keep my memories, my identity.

There's a whole universe inside the photos, inside the book. It's the world of hometowns and that's why I believe that other people can relate to it as well. It is something that I can't explain through words and it should stay like that, like being homesick. You can't judge it; you can only embrace it.

The project has already received some recognition

  • 60% of the book's budget is already financed by the Romanian Administration of the National Cultural Fund
  • 20 images from the series were exhibited in 2016 in Munich, Germany @ Die Faerberei Gallery
  • a second exhibition of the photos will take place in Bucharest on The White Night of the Art Galleries starting October 6 @ AP. 1 gallery.
  • photos published on VICE in multiple articles, both national and international

Meet the team

  • Dragos Hanciu - photographer and the co-editor of the book. He started as a documentary film director, but now he is putting up together 4 years of documenting his hometown  http://dragoshanciu.com/
  • Fiorenza Pinna - the editor and curator of the book, who will help me put everything together. Since 2009, she has been producing and curating exhibitions, books, and photobook workshops all over the world – working with renowned photographers like Rinko Kawauchi, Anouk Kruithof, Rob Hornstra, Joachim Schmid, among the others.
  • Jasmina Al-Qaisi - is a visual ethnographer currently working in Berlin's blooming art space, Savvy Contemporary. She will write a not-so-serious essay about the photos, migration and homesickness, which will be included in the book. The essay is written both in English and Romanian.
  • LOOT - is a the duo of Ana Grigoroiu and Ste Dobrescu. They work actively as graphic designers with a playful approach. They are the brains of JUG Magazine and their design doesn't stop here. LOOT is making a various collection of clothing and accessories. https://weareloot.com/
  • Fabrik - a premium Romanian printing house, who has been winning several awards for the books they've bound in the past years, will do the magical manufacture of the object, the book. http://www.fabrik.ro/
  • Bianca Oana - project manager
  • Petre - wood artist - responsible with the colored stripes https://www.facebook.com/stripeskateboards/
  • Black Horse Mansion - videographers https://www.facebook.com/blackhorsemansion/

Technical Facts

Self-Published edition of 300 copies, 96 color pages, sewn binding, softcover with a photo on each side of the cover. The essay is written both in English and Romanian. The book will contain approx. 70 photos.

The Impact

Starting from the premise that small cities can shrink to the verge of total abandonment, Hometown appears right before an abrupt change, standing out as the ambassador of the places we call home.

Hometown will say no to "update" and tell us how it used to be, before things start to fundamentally change, or even disappear.

Risks and challenges

I have a tight deadline to finish the book, given by The Administration of the National Cultural Fund, which is the 15th of November 2017. If I don't finance the book by the deadline, the fund will take the money back.

Apart from losing the financing, the risks are minimal. I have a great creative & professional team around me who are doing this kind of stuff for a living.

What I Need & What You Get

This campaign will part-fund the following expenses:

  • printing press (printing, binding, cover, finishing)

  • scanning the negatives and grading the photos
  • graphic design & DTP

All the film rolls, laboratory expenses, and travel costs have been already supported by the photographer, so the money raised here will not be used to refinance those expenses, they will go straight into the making of the book.

If you will help me reach beyond 4500$, this will enable a new feature for the book: a hardcover.

In exchange for your support, you will receive some treats as well.

The giveaways are manufactured by Petre, my childhood friend. Check them out.

// Despre carte

Proiectul a primit deja ceva recunoaştere

// Impact

// Provocări şi riscuri

// Echipa
