Our Story
On Saturday February 20th, the symposium on Scientific Diasporas was successfully held at the AAAS Annual Meeting in Vancouver. This despite last minute cancellations and all travel funding falling through. The panelists were Dr. Nicholas P. Farrell, Virginia Commonwealth University (Wild Geese Network of Irish Scientists: The First Year), Dr. Wael Al-Delaimy, University of California, San Diego (The Arab Spring: A Sunny Forecast for the Diaspora Scientists) and Dr. Cardinal Warde, MIT (Caribbean Diaspora for Science, Technology and Innovation: Driver of the Caribbean Science Foundation). All three paid for their trips and lodging out of pocket. The very least we can do is to give them a small honorarium as thanks for their commitment.
The Impact
I will be paying the 3 panelists an honorarium out of my own pocket. The panelists did an exceptional job with their presentations without a penny of financial support for their travel, so I feel it will be worth it to show them our gratitude. But I could use help. The more donations received, the higher the honorarium I can afford to pay the panelists.
What We Need & What You Get
At the very least, we need $600 raised (to offer the panelists $200 each). But ideally, we should give them more. How much will depend on how much we can raise.
The honoraria will be given to the panelists along with the a letter in which is acknowledge your generous financial and logistical contributions. You will be acknowledged in the blog as well: http://science-and-technology-diasporas.blogspot.com/
Other Ways You Can Help
One way we can maximize donations is by asking others you know who care about this topic to donate.
