A senior in high school loses his title as valedictorian after being caught selling drugs a week before graduation. This sends him down an existential crisis the night he was supposed to be graduating, where he contemplates what purpose was for all that work if it amounted to nothing. By talking to his friends (as well as drug induced hallucinations) throughout the night, he begins to feel less worried about the future and realize that happiness comes from within, rather than external accompaniments.

This film contains many themes, but primarily conveys the philosophy that there is no one way to achieve happiness in life. The journey that he takes in this one night teaches him that the only consistency in life is change, which is why people need to be prepared to pivot the direction of their life if things do not go as planned. Having a goal is good, but if you center your entire life around it, you will forget to live in the moment and enjoy the little things in life. The protagonist of the film learns that it is okay to not have a clear idea of what the next chapter in his life will look like, but instead focuses on living in the present. It also highlights the many similarities of astrophysics and Buddhism, such as impermanence, interconnectedness, and cosmology. The philosophical aspects of this film are inspired by the works of Bukowski, Fitzgerald, Camus, Einstein, and Baba Ram Dass.

This film came to me after a similar situation happened to my senior class president when I was a freshman in high school. I wrote the first draft that summer, and for the past six years I have been expanding on the idea. Throughout high school, I consistently noticed the traits of the main character in several of my classmates. The more I looked around, the more Wyatt’s I kept finding in the world. Every time someone new reads the script, they always tell me about people that they knew in high school that were exactly the same. This tells me that it is a very common occurrence to know, or even be, the kid in class with endless potential, but no motivation to do anything with it. I’ve also never seen a coming of age film where the protagonist is scared of graduating high school. The zeitgeist of teen comedies always ends with college being a light at the end of the tunnel, but realistically, many teens see it as an existential nightmare of having to enter the insecurity of what the rest of their lives will look like. The film also diverges from the classic coming of age format with the goal the main character has. Instead of classic bits such as trying to lose their virginity, buy alcohol, or have the best party of their lives, the main character is simply trying to figure out what the meaning of all this is, and what to do after you've reached your goal in life. I wanted the film to be less about drugs, and more about deeper themes such as the many surpconnections between existentialism, Buddhism, astrophysics, and the meaning of life.

We are seeking $1200 in funding. This will go towards feeding our hardworking crew, getting costumes and props, and of course putting the film through festivals. Every dollar donated will go towards the production of this film.
