Overview
This is Minda, my mother. When I was a kid my father always told her that she would never amount to anything and that her only purpose to be a housewife. For a long time, she actually believed him... until she started selling Tupperware. We are adapting this inspiring story into a short film; one that shows what seemingly ordinary people can achieve despite being trapped. Thank you for all of your support, and I hope you will join us and become a part of telling this story. - Curtis

We are a group of filmmakers in our final year of University. We want to make the best film we can, with an important message of female independence and entrepreneurship.  This is why our campaign is important to all of us, it has a message we all believe in and we hope you do too.

Your help will not only allow us to make this film the best it can be, but it will also be instrumental in ensuring our film gets seen by as many people as possible. Marketing it and sending it to film festivals, spreading it's message even further.

Our story is based on our Director's wonderful mother, Minda. In the 90s, her then husband did not believe a woman should work and that it was the man's job to provide. However, she knew that she wanted to be her own person and have the freedom to earn her own money.

Our film will follow a character based on Minda as she discovers a unique means of gaining financial independence. By hosting Tupperware parties, the character grows in confidence and learns that she has more potential in life than just being trapped at home as a housewife.

Minda's story serves as a reminder to us all that whatever the obstacles or challenges, people have the power to change the situation they are in.

Curtis McMullan is originally from London and it’s been his dream to direct films since he was a young child. He has experience in directing short films, commercials, corporate videos and music videos.

He recently won an award at the SE10 Film Festival for a film he made on a zero budget. Watch it here!

Curtis' goal with this film is to adapt his mother's story in a way that speaks to everyone. He wants to prove that a film with a majority female cast can appeal to a mass audience.

Layla de Maunby was born in San Diego, California and spent her childhood travelling around the Mexican desert in a van.

She has previously worked as a runner for the BBC and as an avid film buff, she hopes to direct and produce her own feature films in the future. Check out one of her short films here!

Layla wants to produce a film that is not only stylish and entertaining but also tells a story that can inspire people of all ages and backgrounds. She's very excited to be part of such an inspiring story with such a strong and hopeful message for women.

Dylan Wood, our screenwriter, was born in the south-east of the UK and moved to London with a glint in his eye and a skip in his step.

His aim is to break into the screenwriting business, his influences include Tate Taylor and Michael Arndt. He also has experience in directing, sound recording, casting and editing.

Dylan feels that this is an important story to tell. While researching for the script he discovered that there are still a lot of women out there that aren't given the freedom to work and make their own money. He's hoping to bring this heartwarming story to life!

Benjamin Hicks hails from hilly Devon and wants to become a documentary camera operator.

He has worked in the camera department on corporate videos, live events, documentaries and dramas. Last year he won a 48-hour film challenge at MCM Comicon in London for his work within the group Studio18. Watch it here!

Benny wants to bring more meaning to the story and through cinematography, ensuring every lighting set-up and every frame shows the journey of the character.

Bradley Ashton originates from a little town in Suffolk called Bury St Edmunds. His job on this production is to manage the crew on set and make sure everything goes to plan.

Around 8 years ago he gave up his job as a butcher and fishmonger to pursue a career in film. Since then he has worked on a number of student productions and has recently started working freelance. He was part of Benny’s team that won the 48-hour film challenge at MCM Comicon.

Bradley is very interested in how the story is offering something different to what he has previously seen. He wants to help create something that we can all relate to.

Laura Turpie comes from a chilly hilltop town known as Buxton (just like the bottled water) and aspires to work in post-production sound.

During her time at university, she has been developing her skills as a sound designer. She is also a very talented artist and will be providing us with some beautiful storyboards! Have a look at some of her artwork here!

Laura wants to create subtle but immersive sound design that will help the audience feel what the character is feeling.

Lucy McLeod is from Margate and found her passion for production design at university. She loves taking an ordinary setting and transforming it into something new.

She has worked as an art department assistant on a commercial and has been the production designer on many student films.

Lucy wants to use production design to take the audience on a nostalgic trip back to the 90s.

Matt Alexander from Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk and is pursuing a career in camera operating.

His background is in directing and filming music videos and he has worked as a DOP on a short crime drama.

Matt wants to use the camera to make the film really feel like it was shot in the 90s. He has been working closely with Benny researching how film and TV looked back then.

Kieran Worboys was born in the small town of Billericay, Essex. He specialises in offline editing and has worked as an edit assistant at a post-production house in the heart of London.

His ultimate goal is to complete post production on a feature length documentary. Last year he edited a short documentary about happiness. Watch it here!

Kieran is really excited about this project. He aims to accurately create an emotional attachment between the characters and the audience in the edit of this inspiring true story.

As students, we are used to making the best of a small budget. However, filmmaking is expensive and we believe this story deserves a bigger scope.

Not only do we have experience working on productions with a similar budget to what we're asking for, but by working with smaller budgets, we have all learned how to use our budget responsibly and effectively. So you can rest assured that your investment in us and our story will not go to waste.

Here is a budget breakdown:

We have some great perks lined up for you, and because we would like you to feel rewarded, we are actively looking for more perks to add to the campaign. So keep checking our page!

During the research process of our script, we found that shockingly, the belief that a woman's sole purpose is to be a housewife still exists in modern Britain.

Your contribution will mean that our message gets out there. Anyone who finds themselves in a similar situation, or is feeling downtrodden, like they can't get out of a rut they are stuck in, has the power to change it.

With your help, we can spread this message through one of the most engaging and powerful mediums in this modern age: Film.

As with any creative venture, there are risks. There are many challenges that we will face but with your help, we know we will overcome them!

As our film is set in the 90s this adds a significant amount to the production cost. This makes finding locations for a cheap price difficult and creates more cost in production design. However, our team are great sweet-talkers (well, some of us anyway), and we will do our best to get discounts as the time setting is vital to our story. The reason for this is not only because this is when the original story took place, but also because we believe that the idea of a woman being trapped as a housewife is an outdated viewpoint. We want to challenge this view by drawing parallels from today to the past.

Another big challenge is distribution. Yes, it's all well and good when the director yells 'that's a wrap!' and everyone rejoices and shares buckets of wine and dances into the night. But the cold hangover of distribution looms, how will we get our film out there? Simple answer - film festivals. Again, you guessed it, we need help to pay for entry into these.

But, money isn't everything! If you want to help us but can't spare the cash (trust us, we understand), then give us a share on:

Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/HousewifeFilm/

Twitter - https://twitter.com/HousewifeShort/

Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/HousewifeFilm/

Just a few simple clicks is a great help, and we really appreciate it.

So thank you once again! Let's make this film together and tell a great story!
