Why should you support us?

If you won a prize, would you thank your body? Probably not! Yet, it led you where you are today!

We are done with mainstream media representation of bodies. Thanks to trends on Instagram such as #bodypositivity, #bodyneutrality, #bodyacceptance (among others), we're finally able to see diverse bodies, which is a much more accurate reprensation of society. And we've decided to propel this trend to the big screen!

Here's a blurb you can use to share on your socials: I've contributed to this campaign because we all have a responsibility to celebrate body diversity!

Depending on your support level, you can get one of these organic or recycled cotton tote bags!

Our Project

“I’d like to thank my body” is a short documentary about Rosalie’s quest to have a better relationship with her body. In her 30s, and living with muscular dystrophy, Rosalie wants to see her body in a more wholesome and positive light with an empowerment or boudoir photoshoot.

Winnipeg photographer Teri Hofford specializes in empowerment photography and has studied the psychology of images. She’s also an advocate for body diversity and fights prejudices resulting from fatphobia.

Rosalie and Teri will bring this story to life and will address issues of female representation, sensuality and sexuality, fatphobia and disability. This is a personal story that addresses some issues of body diversity. But it’s so complex and varied. We are not acting on the pretense that we can address all its intricacies in a short doc! Hopefully it sparks something in people to explore it further!

Notre équipe / Our Team

Our little team is mostly female and the majority of its members live with disabilities. We are going to make this project in French and English and make it fully accessible, with closed captioning, video description as well as with ASL and LSQ interpretations.

Rosalie Best- Protagonist

“I think this project is important because there are a lot of young women in wheelchairs who are struggling with a multi layered body acceptance. It’s not just weight or bad skin, it’s accepting a body that betrays you and causes you physical pain. Even though more disability activists and disabled models are popping up on social media, they still are thin and have full makeup and hair done. They’re great champions for disability acceptance but it seems to be the same body type across the board. I want to see someone who looks like me loving themselves and finding peace with their body."

Teri Hofford – Photographer

"As an empowerment photographer who has worked with thousands of humans for the last 10 years to help them see themselves in a new light, a common thread is that everyone - and I mean EVERYONE - has been taught to dislike their bodies or that their bodies are not "good enough".  One of the main statements I get about my social media and website has been about the value of folk seeing themselves represented in bodies like theirs in art - it slowly erodes the negative narrative that they have been taught from the time they were young.  This is especially true for folks living in marginalized bodies, whom have had their stories told about them, instead of BY them - and while the body positivity movement has made some progressive in the way of diversity, it falls short and has become commercialized and diluted - leaving out the folks who need the movement the most.  Projects like this give platforms to folks who are standardly overlooked to telling their stories.”

Connor Derraugh – Composer

“As a proud advocate for the disability community, I’m excited to compose and perform music for this film. As a traumatic brain injury survivor, I’ve faced many stigmas and adversities. Initially paralyzed on my right side, I presented as physically challenged and had to deal with many new realities including cognitive challenges. Over the 11 years since, I’m fortunate that my condition slowly improved to today, where my handicaps are far less visible. Throughout my journey I’ve witnessed how people’s perception of me has changed, pre-injury to post-injury to present. I am empathetic to the obstacles faced by many and trust that the unique perspective of this documentary will help to pivot the mindset from how we appear to who we are.”

Sara Calnek - DOP and editor

"In this project, these two passions intersect, revealing the impact of unrealistic body standards on persons living with disabilities. To tackle these social constructs means to educate, and to educate means to amplify the voices of those who are marginalized. I want to be an intimate part of sharing Rosalie’s personal story, not only to educate others, but also to grow myself by listening and honouring her.”

Catherine Dulude - Writer, director, producer

"This is a passion project of mine. Stories such as this one are tremendously important to share and I do believe that they can change someone's perspective. We still have so much to learn about the broad spectrum of body diversity. Let us share this one particular story and hopefully, it will cause a ripple effect on your social media feeds, in conversations around the diner table, in media representation and ultimately, in public policy. All bodies deserve respect and to be seen."

Christine Kos - Graphic Artist

Joanna Hawkins - Deaf ASL interpreter

Stéphanie Lamy-Therrien - Interprète LSQ
