We are KIOO Project.
We teach photography
to children from communities with limited access to creative resources. Our nonprofit helps young girls and boys
develop self-confidence &
discover self-expression. We put cameras in the hands of young people who learn to visually tell stories about who they are & how they see the world. We have previously worked
with
restaveks (child slaves) in
Gressier, Haiti & students living in Nairobi, Kenya's Lenana slum. The moments they capture take our breath away.
These photographs were taken by students in our January 2014 Kenya workshop.
Where KIOO is going next.
This November we are focusing our lens on gender equality. In partnership with She’s the First & Shanti Bhavan School in Baliganapalli,
India we will host a 10-day workshop with young girls and boys from the Dalit caste (also known
as the Untouchables). Girls will learn photographic techniques the first week. During the second week, boys will join the workshop to learn photography from a
special group of newly-minted teachers – the girls.
This unique journey ensures that both girls and boys experience the rewards of an arts
education. Girls develop valuable leadership & presentation skills along
with the confidence to become active agents of change in their own lives &
communities. Boys understand the value & worth of girls in their community
by learning a new skill through them. At the end of the 2 weeks, a gallery show
exhibiting the students’ work presents the local community with the opportunity to celebrate the creativity blossoming from budding photographers.
All the camera & printing equipment we bring to India remains at the school. Our goal is for our young graduates to continue teaching & learning photography long after the
workshop is over.
